A CONFESSION: uma Série Policial Inglesa Diferenciada do Padrão. Emocionante e Crítica.

Vejo tantos filmes e séries policiais que elas ficam sem novidades e repetindo tramas, personagens e cenas. É difícil alguma inovação ou surpresa, principalmente nas séries quase todas muito parecidas. Por isto, quando alguma sai do quadrado, tipo BROADCHURCH e THE KILLING vale muito a pena destacá-la.

Nesta semana fui surpreendido por uma nova série produzida pela ITV Inglesa, em exibição na Amazon Prime Video: UMA CONFISSÃO, com seis episódios é realmente algo diferente do panorama geral. Como quase sempre, no início tem aquele aviso de que a série é baseada em fatos reais.

A trama já foi vista dezenas (ou centenas) de vezes. Uma moça desaparece em uma pequena comunidade inglesa. A Polícia inicia uma operação de busca pela desaparecida, dentro daquela máxima de que a chance de recuperá-la com vida se restringe às primeiras 24 horas. A população se voluntaria para participar das buscas. Os criminosos sexuais cadastrados na região são os principais suspeitos. Tudo dentro do padrão.

O chefe da investigação é Detetive Superintendente Stephen Fulcher, magistralmente interpretado pelo ator britânico Martin Freeman (O SENHOR DOS ANÉIS e PANTERA NEGRA), ouso dizer em seu melhor papel. O DS que ele faz aqui é competente, inventivo, obstinado, mas revela uma humanidade rara de se ver. O sofrimento dele – em empatia pelas vítimas e suas famílias – é impressionante. O elenco ainda tem duas atrizes inglesas soberbas : Imelda Stauton (HARRY POTTER e PRIDE) e Siobhan Finneran (DOWNTON ABBEY e HAPPY VALLEY).

Uma nota distintiva de A CONFESSION é o grau de detalhamento da operação policial para encontrar a moça. As reuniões do grupo de investigadores presidida por Fulcher, as estratégias traçadas e as rejeitadas, os motivos de cada escolha, as discordâncias e discussões internas na polícia, os oficiais de ligação da Polícia com as famílias, os reconhecimentos de corpos, tudo aparece com um detalhamento que eu nunca vi antes.

Há cenas emocionantes e invulgares. A reunião da comunidade da pequena cidade para homenagear o cortejo do funeral da moça, por exemplo, é tocante demais. O reconhecimento ao Policial pela comunidade é outra cena distintiva.

As brigas (por inveja interna) dentro da Polícia que levam a uma investigação sobre o responsável é outra novidade de A CONFESSION. Raras vezes se vê este tema da política interna da Polícia como elemento relevante da trama. aqui ele é essencial. Até a presença daqueles chefes em posição chave de poder que lavam as mãos na hora difícil.

Outro elemento diferenciador de A CONFESSION é o enfoque crítico da decisão judicial discriminatória com relação a uma das vítimas porque a defesa alega que ela era uma prostituta. A condenação da vítima por julgamento moral – ocorrente em muitos casos de violência contra a mulher – é real e impressionante.

Vê-se em A CONFESSION um elemento de realidade muito pouco comum. O motivo vem nos créditos. A série é baseada no livro CATCHING A SERIAL KILLER, escrito pelo próprio Fulcher, titular da investigação.

Para quem gosta de thriller, A CONFESSION (4 dos 6 episódios já disponíveis) é um filme diferenciado. Os fãs vão certamente se emocionar e se empolgar com um produto fora do padrão.

I see so many films and thriller series that they are without news and repeating plots, characters and scenes. Some innovation or surprise is very unusual, especially in the series that are almost all very similar. For this reason, when one leaves the square, like BROADCHURCH and THE KILLING, it is very worth highlighting.

This week I was surprised by a new series produced by ITV Inglesa, shown on Amazon Prime Video: A CONFESSION, with six episodes is really something different from the general panorama. As almost always, at the beginning there is that warning that the series is based on real facts.

The plot has been seen dozens (or hundreds) of times. A girl disappears in a small English community. The Police initiate a search operation for the missing woman, within the maxim that the chance of recovering her alive is almost restricted to the first 24 hours. The population volunteers to participate in the searches. Registered sex offenders in the region are the main suspects. Everything within the standard.

The head of the investigation is Detective Superintendent Stephen Fulcher, masterfully played by British actor Martin Freeman (THE LORD OF THE RINGS and BLACK PANTHER), I dare say in his best role. The DS he makes here is competent, inventive, obstinate, but reveals a humanity that is rare to see. His suffering – in empathy for the victims and their families – is impressive. The cast still has two superb English actresses: Imelda Stauton (HARRY POTTER and PRIDE) and Siobhan Finneran (DOWNTON ABBEY and HAPPY VALLEY).

A distinguishing note of A CONFESSION is the degree of detail of the police operation to find the girl. The meetings of the group of investigators chaired by Fulcher, the strategies outlined and rejected, the reasons for each choice, the internal disagreements and discussions in the police, the police liaison officers with the families, the body recognition, everything appears with a detailing that I’ve never seen before.

There are exciting and unusual scenes. The small town community meeting to honor the girl’s funeral procession, for example, is too touching. The recognition of the Police by the community is another distinctive scene.

The fights (for internal envy) within the Police that lead to an investigation into the person responsible are another novelty of A CONFESSION. This theme of internal police policy is rarely seen as a relevant element of the plot. here it is essential. Even the presence of those chiefs in a key position of power who become coward at a difficult time.

Another distinguishing element of A CONFESSION is the critical focus of the discriminatory judicial decision in relation to one of the victims because the defense claims that she was a prostitute. The victim’s conviction by moral judgment – which occurs in many cases of violence against women – is real and impressive.

A very unusual element of reality is seen in A CONFESSION. The reason comes in the credits. The series is based on the book CATCHING A SERIAL KILLER, written by Fulcher himself, holder of the investigation.

For those who like a thriller, A CONFESSION (4 of the 6 episodes already available) is a different film. Fans will certainly be thrilled and excited about a non-standard product.
