Foi em um sábado à tarde, quatorze anos atrás que eu e meu amigo e afilhado Felipe Vieira combinamos de ir ver o filme argentino O SEGREDO DOS SEUS OLHOS, de Juan José Campanella.
À medida em que as imagens se sucediam na tela, nós dois percebemos que estávamos diante de um filme extraordinário.
Campanella tinha atingido o máximo de sua arte, ao contar a história do funcionário público do forum, Benjamin Espósito (Ricardo Darin, extraordinário), que é encarregado de investigar o estupro e morte da linda jovem Liliana Coloto (Carla Quevedo).
Benjamin vai conviver com tipos incríveis, como a Magistrada Irene Menendez Hastings (Soledad Villamil, perfeita), seu colega de cartório Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella, em um dos maiores trabalhos de ator da história do cinema argentino), o viúvo Ricardo Moralez (Pablo Rago) e o frio assassino Isidóro Gomez (Javier Godino).
O roteiro do filme de Campanella é uma obra irretocável, Traz uma sucessão de cenas cujos diálogos têm frases e situações inesquecíveis. Há amor, paixão, crime, fanatismo pelo futebol, alcoolismo, lealdade, luto, ódio, ditadura, corrupção, tudo tratado com um humanismo raras vezes visto.
E, de quebra, o filme é um thriller exemplar.
Já vi O SEGREDO DOS SEUS OLHOS mais de vinte vezes (algumas vezes apenas uma parte quando me deparo com ele sendo exibido na tv paga). Cada vez me impressiono mais pela perfeição absoluta do filme de Campanella.
Incrível que já faz quatorze anos daquela tarde de sábado.
It was on a Saturday afternoon, fourteen years ago, that my friend and godson Felipe Vieira and I agreed to go see the Argentine film THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES, by Juan José Campanella.
As the images followed one another on the screen, we both realized that we were looking at an extraordinary film.
Campanella had reached the height of his art when telling the story of the forum’s civil servant, Benjamin Espósito (Ricardo Darin, extraordinary), who is in charge of investigating the rape and death of the beautiful young Liliana Coloto (Carla Quevedo).
Benjamin will live with incredible characters, such as Magistrate Irene Menendez Hastings (Soledad Villamil, perfect), his office colleague Pablo Sandoval (Guillermo Francella, in one of the greatest acting jobs in the history of Argentine cinema), the widower Ricardo Moralez (Pablo Rago) and cold-hearted assassin Isidoro Gomez (Javier Godino).
The screenplay for Campanella’s film is an impeccable work. It features a succession of scenes whose dialogues have unforgettable phrases and situations. There is love, passion, crime, football fanaticism, alcoholism, loyalty, mourning, hatred, dictatorship, corruption, all treated with a humanism rarely seen.
And, of course, the film is an exemplary thriller.
I’ve seen THE SECRET IN THEIR EYES more than twenty times (sometimes just a part when I come across it being shown on pay TV). I am increasingly impressed by the absolute perfection of Campanella’s film.
Incredible that it’s been fourteen years since that Saturday afternoon.
