A NETFLIX está mostrando o filme REPTILE (acho o título brasileiro CAMALEÕES muito ruim), dirigido pelo jovem Grant Singer. Singer faz carreira dirigindo vídeos e clips musicais de grandes estrelas. Curiosamente, nessa sua primeira experiência como diretor de um longa metragem policial com pretensões, na minha opinião, acertou em tudo o que tentou.
Tom “Oaklahoma” Nichols é um detetive veterano que teve sua carreira quase encerrada em um episódio não muito explicado anos atrás na Filadélfia. Os parceiros o resgataram e hoje ele é um policial meio acomodado, na Nova Inglaterra, onde reside com a esposa amorosa (Alicia Silverstone, muito bem).
Tom é vivido com maestria pelo ator porto-riquenho Benicio del Toro, Oscar por TRAFFIC, de Steven Soderbergh. Eu acho os trabalhos de Del Toro simplesmente sensacionais. Para mim, ele é o tipo de ator que mergulha no personagem de uma forma tão imersiva que a gente sente que aquela pessoa tem existência real. Seu Tom Nichols é mais um na galeria numerosa de grandes trabalhos dele (SICARIO, OS SUSPEITOS, 21 GRAMAS).
O crime brutal que Tom e sua equipe vão investigar é o estupro e assassinato de Summer (Matilda Lutz) uma jovem namorada de um empresário imobiliário local. O crime foi tão violento que o legista informa que teve que serrar ossos da vítima para poder tirar a faca que a matara.
À medida que Tom investiga, como em todo filme policial noir, vai se vendo que a calma e tranquilidade daquela pequena comunidade é apenas superficial e que, por baixo, há corrupção, traições, complôs, falsidades sem fim.
O elenco de REPTILE é ótimo. Além de Del Todo e Silverstone (que encantam em cada cena juntos), há Justin Timberlake, a maravilhosa Frances Fischer, Eric Bogosian, Michael Pitt, Mike Piniewsky, Karl Glusman, Ato Essandoh e Domenik Lombardozzi. Um time homogêneo e eficaz.
Um destaque absoluto do filme é a utilização da música, tanto nas canções como na trilha instrumental. Singer optou por destacar a trilha musical. Por exemplo, as românticas ANGEL OF THE MORNING e KNOCKIN’ ON THE HEAVENS DOOR são utilizadas de modo impactante e inesquecível.
Há muitas cenas brilhantes no filme. Por exemplo, a volta para casa do casal Nichols, depois de uma festa, quando são abordados por uma patrulha policial é cinematograficamente brilhante e cria um suspense exemplar.
Na minha opinião, REPTILE é um dos melhores filmes de 2023. Merece todos os elogios.
NETFLIX is showing the film REPTILE (I think the Brazilian title CHAMELEONS is very bad), directed by the young Grant Singer. Singer makes a career out of directing videos and music videos for big stars. Interestingly, in his first experience as a director of a feature-length detective film with pretensions, in my opinion, he succeeded in everything he tried.
Tom “Oaklahoma” Nichols is a veteran detective whose career almost ended in a not-so-explained episode years ago in Philadelphia. His partners rescued him and today he is a somewhat comfortable police officer in New England, where he lives with his loving wife (Alicia Silverstone, very well).
Tom is played masterfully by Puerto Rican actor Benicio del Toro, Oscar for TRAFFIC, by Steven Soderbergh. I think Del Toro’s work is simply sensational. For me, he is the type of actor who immerses himself in the character in such an deep way that we feel that that person has a real existence. His Tom Nichols is another in the numerous gallery of his great works (SICARIO, THE SUSPECTS, 21 GRAMS).
The brutal crime that Tom and his team will investigate is the rape and murder of Summer (Matilda Lutz), a young girlfriend of a local real estate businessman. The crime was so violent that the coroner reports that he had to saw the victim’s bones to be able to remove the knife that killed her.
As Tom investigates, as in every noir crime film, he begins to see that the calm and tranquility of that small community is only superficial and that, underneath, there is corruption, betrayals, plots, endless falsehoods.
The cast of REPTILE is great. In addition to Del Todo and Silverstone (who enchant in every scene together), there is Justin Timberlake, the wonderful Frances Fischer, Eric Bogosian, Michael Pitt, Mike Piniewsky, Karl Glusman, Ato Essandoh and Domenik Lombardozzi. A homogeneous and effective team.
An absolute highlight of the film is the use of music, both in the songs and in the instrumental track. Singer chose to highlight the musical score. For example, the romantic songs ANGEL OF THE MORNING and KNOCKIN’ ON THE HEAVENS DOOR are used in an impactful and unforgettable way.
There are many brilliant scenes in the film. For example, the Nichols couple’s return home, after a party, when they are approached by a police patrol is cinematographically brilliant and creates exemplary suspense.
In my opinion, REPTILE is one of the best films of 2023. It deserves all the praise.
