Minha maratona sobre os filmes de motim a bordo seguiu ontem com O GRANDE MOTIM, filme que Frank Lloyd dirigiu em 1935, disponível no Amazon Prime Video.
Clark Gable vive Fletcher Christian um marinheiro inglês, segundo no comando da nau Bounty, um sujeito ambicioso mas com a noção de que os marujos devem ser tratados condignamente. O comandante da nave é o Capitão Bllght, cruel e despojado de quaisquer sentimentos que não sejam o cumprimento da missão comercial deles e a hierarquia acima de tudo.
Na atual viagem do Bounty ao Oriente, Blight trata os subordinados à base do chicote e das penas de redução das rações de comida e água. Ficar dois anos no mar, nessas condições vai criando um clima de revolta na tripulação, acentuada pelas penas desumanas que o Capitão impõe, como fazer um marujo já morto ser chicoteado na frente de todos os colegas.
Christian vai, aos poucos, se revoltando com a crueldade do chefe, até o momento em que mais uma decisão violenta do líder o leva a comandar um motim a bordo.
O GRANDE MOTIM é um filme espetacular. Se Clark Gable nunca foi um grande ator, sua presença cênica poderosa era inegável. Seu carisma de galã indiscutível funciona tantos nas cenas de confronto como nas idílicas cenas de amor na Martinica.
A alma do filme é, no entanto, Charles Laughton. O talentosíssimo ator inglês de TESTEMUNHA DE ACUSAÇÃO, SPARTACUS, OS AMORES DE HENRIQUE VIII e O CORCUNDA DE NOTRE DAME foi realmente um intérprete de primeira categoria. O cruel e insensível Capitão Blight ;e antológico personagem criado por Laughton. Cada cena dele é absolutamente primorosa.
Revi o filme depois de muitos anos. Segue intacto no exame que faz da crueldade humana. O julgamento dos amotinados é outra cena memorável.
O GRANDE MOTIM é uma aula de cinema.
My marathon about mutiny films on board continued yesterday with MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, a film that Frank Lloyd directed in 1935, available on Amazon Prime Video.
Clark Gable plays Fletcher Christian, an English sailor, second in command of the ship Bounty, an ambitious guy but with the notion that sailors should be treated with dignity. The ship’s commander is Captain Bllght, cruel and devoid of any feelings other than fulfilling their commercial mission and hierarchy above all.
On the Bounty’s current voyage to the East, Blight treats his subordinates with the whip and the punishment of reducing their food and water rations. Spending two years at sea in these conditions creates a climate of revolt among the crew, accentuated by the inhumane punishments that the Captain imposes, such as having an already dead sailor whipped in front of all his colleagues.
Christian gradually becomes revolted by his boss’s cruelty, until the moment when yet another violent decision by the leader leads him to lead a mutiny on board.
MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY is a spectacular film. If Clark Gable was never a great actor, his powerful stage presence was undeniable. His undisputed heartthrob charisma works both in the confrontation scenes and in the idyllic love scenes in Martinique.
The soul of the film is, however, Charles Laughton. The extremely talented English actor from WITNESS FOR THE PROSECUTION, SPARTACUS, THE PRIVATE LIFE OF HENRY VIII and THE HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME was truly a first-rate performer. The cruel and insensitive Captain Blight is an anthological character created by Laughton. Every scene of his is absolutely exquisite.
I saw the film again after many years. It remains intact in its examination of human cruelty. The trial of the mutineers is another memorable scene.
THE GREAT RIOT is a cinematic lesson.
