Trata-se de uma comédia dramática sobre uma jovem (Aubrey Plaza) que herda do Pai um editora de livros em Nova Iorque, Pelas dificuldades financeiras da empresa, ela resolve investir tudo em convencer um velho e retirado autor sob contrato com a casa a fazer um tour de lançamento de seu novo livro.
Ele é o alcoólatra, ranzinza e deprimido Harris Shaw (Michael Caine), cujo único livro de sucesso tem mais de vinte anos.
Os conflitos e diferenças entre os dois é o centro do filme. Enquanto Lucy está iniciando, com toda energia para salvar sua editora, Shaw está desencantado da vida, desde a viuvez e destila agressividade e mau humor.
Aubrey Plaza é uma jovem atriz que busca seu lugar ao sol em projetos diferentes do usual. Gosto muito dela em THE WHITE LOTUS e no desconcertante EMILY THE CRIMINAL. Sua Lucy Stanbridge é sempre interessante de se ver.
Michael Caine, como sempre, é um show a parte. O desencanto de Harris é palpável em cada cena.
Para mim, nas cenas de humor, o filme de Roessler foi bastante bem. Harry muitas boas cenas explorando com graça o lado inusitado da parceria entre os protagonistas. Nessa parte, o filme acerta em expor o drama da criação literária e as dificuldades do mercado de livros na era da internet e das telas.
Quando o filme foca os motivos do posicionamento depressivo de Shaw, acho que o roteiro mais perde oportunidades do que atinge seus objetivos. É quase um exercício de auto piedade e pieguice.
De qualquer sorte, gostei de ver BEST SELLERS, O tema é muito interessante e a dupla central consegue ótimos momentos. Só isso já coloca o filme na categoria dos que valem a pena.

Due to the company’s financial difficulties, she decides to invest everything in convincing an old and retired author under contract with the house to do a launch tour for his new book.
He is the alcoholic, surly and depressed Harris Shaw (Michael Caine), whose only successful book is more than twenty years old.
The conflicts and differences between the two are the center of the film. While Lucy is starting out, with all her energy to save her publisher, Shaw is disenchanted with life, since his widowhood and exudes aggression and bad humor.
Aubrey Plaza is a young talented actress who is looking for her place in the sun in different projects than usual. I really like her in THE WHITE LOTUS and the disconcerting EMILY THE CRIMINAL. Her Lucy Stanbridge is always interesting to see.
Michael Caine, as always, is a show apart. Harris’s disenchantment is palpable in every scene.
For me, in the humorous scenes, Roessler’s film did quite well. Harry has many good scenes exploring with grace the unusual side of the partnership between the protagonists. In this part, the film also succeeds in exposing the drama of literary creation and the difficulties of the book market in the age of the internet and screens.
When the film focuses on the reasons for Shaw’s depressive life, I think the script misses more opportunities than it achieves its objectives. It’s almost an exercise in self-pity and corniness.
Anyway, I enjoyed watching BEST SELLERS. The theme is very interesting and the central duo has great moments. This alone puts the film in the worthwhile category.
