A escritora americana Patricia Highsmith escreveu cinco livros com o personagem do vigarista Tom Ripley. Isso nos dá esperança que a NETFLIX volte com mais temporadas da excelente série RIPLEY, ora em cartaz.
Não me alinho estar os fãs da adaptação que Anthony Minghella fez em 1989, O TALENTOSO RIPLEY. Apesar do elenco estrelado (Matt Damon, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett e Gwyneth Paltrow), o filme de Minghella sempre me pareceu ambíguo demais, parecendo tentar justificar as barbaridades que Ripley fazia.
RIPLEY, a série, assume completamente o amoralismo do personagem. Ele não é um anti herói. É um vilão que tem o protagonismo da história. Sabemos, desde o inicio que Tom Ripley é especializado em falsidades, mentiras e golpes.
Para o sucesso da série foi fundamental o extraordinário trabalho de Andrew Scott como tom Ripley. Sua face de pouca (ou nenhuma) emoção é perfeita. Até agora é fácil o melhor trabalho do ator. Com ele, Dakota Fanning, John Flynn, Margherita Buy e Eliot Summer (o filho não binário de Sting) têm papeis relevantíssimos.
Mas o segundo melhor trabalho da série, na minha opinião é o do ator Maurizio Lombardi, como o Inspetor Pietro Ravini. Seu detetive é maravilhoso no jogo de gato e rato que estabelece com Ripley em busca do culpado pelos assassinatos que se sucedem. Sua atuação é impecável, da primeira à última cena em que aparece.
A série produzida por Steve Zaillan, o roteirista, produtor e diretor, responsável por MONEYBALL, THE NIGHT OF e THE IRISHMAN tem méritos a granel. A fotografia em preto e branco é um luxo absoluto, uma verdadeira sequência de quadros lindos na telinha.
O roteiro (do próprio Zaillan, baseado no primeiro livro de Highsmith sobre Tom Ripley) é excelente como drama, como aventura, como romance e como policial. Sabe se comportar em todos esses gêneros.
Há achados cinematográficos brilhantes, como as pegadas vermelhas do gato, a participação de John Malkovich (que já viveu Ripley no cinema), o olhar sobre os milionários e suas vidas vazias, as citações inúmeras de filmes clássicos e, em especial, um senso de humor meio non sense, meio macabro que pontua a narrativa e eleva muito o interesse pela narrativa.
RIPLEY é, desde já, um dos destaques de 2024. Tomara que a gente veja mais golpes do vilão amoral de Highsmith na pele de Andrew Scott.

I don’t agree with being fans of the adaptation that Anthony Minghella made in 1989, THE TALENTED RIPLEY. Despite the star-studded cast (Matt Damon, Jude Law, Cate Blanchett and Gwyneth Paltrow), Minghella’s film always seemed too ambiguous to me, trying to justify the barbaric things that Ripley did.
RIPLEY, the series, completely embraces the character’s amoralism. He’s not an anti-hero. He is a villain who plays the main role in the story. We know from the beginning that Tom Ripley specializes in falsehoods, lies and scams.
The extraordinary work of Andrew Scott as Tom Ripley was fundamental to the success of the series. His face of little (or no) emotion is perfect. So far this is easily the actor’s best work. With him, Dakota Fanning, John Flynn, Margherita Buy and Eliot Summer (Sting‘s non-binary son) have very relevant roles.
But the second best work in the series, in my opinion, is that of actor Maurizio Lombardi, as Inspector Pietro Ravini. His detective is wonderful in the cat and mouse game he plays with Ripley in search of the culprit for the murders that follow one another. His performance is impeccable, from the first to the last scene in which he appears.
The series produced by Steve Zaillan, the writer, producer and director, responsible for MONEYBALL, THE NIGHT OF and THE IRISHMAN has great merits. Black and white photography is an absolute luxury, a true sequence of beautiful pictures on the small screen.
The script (by Zaillan himself, based on Highsmith’s first book about Tom Ripley) is excellent as a drama, as an adventure, as a romance and as a detective story. He knows how to behave in all these genres.
There are brilliant cinematic finds, such as the cat’s red paws, the participation of John Malkovich (who played as Ripley in the cinema), the look at millionaires and their empty lives, the countless quotes from classic films and, in particular, a sense of humor half-nonsense, half-macabre that punctuates the narrative and greatly increases interest in the story.
RIPLEY is, right now, one of the highlights of 2024. I hope we see more blows from Highsmith’s amoral villain lived by Andrew Scott.
