Quando penso no ator irlandês de 72 anos, Liam Neeson, logo me vêm à mente filmes extraordinários em que ele estrelou, como ALISTA DE SCHINDLER, ROB ROY, MICHAEL COLLINS e KINSEY. Como Neeson já trabalhou em 189 filmes, em um plano mais de puro entretenimento, temos ainda LOVE ACTUALLY e suas participações como o Mestre Jedi Qui-Gon Jinn em vários títulos da franquia STAR WARS.
De uns anos para cá, Liam Neeson tem preferido filmes de ação, onde roteiros mal escritos simplificam tudo. Sua carreira parecia meio à deriva.
O filme NA TERRA DE SANTOS E PECADORES, de Robert Lorentz – em cartaz no Prime Video – nesse contexto é uma agradável surpresa. Neeson é Finbar Murphy, um veterano de guerra viúvo, que virou assassino profissional em uma pequena comunidade da Irlanda do Norte, muito pelo dinheiro, muito pelo cenário político complicado.
Quando não está trabalhando, é um pacato cidadão local, que se relaciona com o Chefe de Polícia (o sempre ótimo Ciarán Hinds) , a dona do bar, sua filha cheia de dúvidas, uma idosa cujo marido está entrevado e outros tipos locais. Esse dia a dia de Murphy e seus amigos dá ao filme uma grandeza insuspeitada. É a grandeza da simplicidade.
Certo dia, quatro terroristas do IRA – responsáveis por um sangrento atentado na capital, se escondem na cidade. A chefe do grupo é Doirean McCann, interpretada com qualidade pela atriz irlandesa Kerry Condon.
Os caminhos deles e de Murphy vão se cruzar.
O filme de Lorentz não abre mão de ser um filme de ação. Mas, ao menos para mim, o faz privilegiando os personagens, suas incredulidades, hesitações, medos e dúvidas, diante do terrível quadro da chegada do terrorismo à pequena cidade. E as deslumbrantes paisagens irlandesas ajudam muito o filme.
Gostei bastante de IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS. É um ótimo filme como drama e como ação. E nos lembra do velho Neeson, um sujeito que já fez grandes e inesquecíveis papeis no cinema.

For a few years now, Liam Neeson has preferred pure action films, where poorly written scripts simplify everything. His career seemed a bit adrift.
The film IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS, by Robert Lorentz – currently showing on Prime Video – in this context is a pleasant surprise. Neeson is Finbar Murphy, a widowed war veteran turned professional assassin in a small community in Northern Ireland, largely for the money, largely for the complicated political landscape.
When he’s not working, he’s a quiet local citizen who hangs out with the Chief of Police (the always great Ciarán Hinds) , the bar owner, her doubtful daughter, an elderly woman whose husband is in trouble, and other local types. This day-to-day life of Murphy and his friends gives the film an unsuspected grandeur. It’s the great thing about simplicity.
One day, four IRA terrorists – responsible for a bloody attack in the capital, hide in the city. The head of the group is Doirean McCann, played with quality by Irish actress Kerry Condon.
Their paths and Murphy’s will cross.
Lorentz’s film doesn’t give up on being an action film. But, at least for me, it does so by focusing on the characters, their disbelief, hesitations, fears and doubts, faced with the terrible scenario of the arrival of terrorism in the small town. E the beautiful Irish landscape helps the movie a lot.
I really liked IN THE LAND OF SAINTS AND SINNERS. It’s a great film as drama and as an action picture. And it reminds us of old Neeson, a guy who has played great and unforgettable roles in cinema.
