Eugenie Cléry, a young French woman from high society, often faces social conventions and her family, defying prejudices, going to bars to drink, smoke and read poetry, despising arranged marriages and coming into conflict with her abusive father.
As she also has moments of trance in which she claims to hear spirits, her father and brother admit her to the horrifying hospital of Salpêtrière, in Paris.
There the young woman – played magnificently by Lou de Lâage – goes to the hell of mistreatment, abuse, torture, cruelty from staff and doctors and forgetfulness of her family. Lâage won an international Emmy for his wonderful performance.
Only one nurse, the dedicated Genevieve (director Laurent herself) will show care to intern Eugénie, after she gives her a message from her dead sister.
