Está em cartaz na NETFLIX, a série THE PERFECT COUPLE, de Jenna Lamia, com seis capítulos.
O foco da trama é um família daquelas que antigamente se diza “podres de ricos”, que prepara em sua mansão de veraneio na sofisticada ilha de Nantucket, o casamento de um dos filhos com uma “plebéia”.
A matriarca da família, a escritora de livros policiais Greer Garrison Winbury (Nicole Kidman, excelente) vai aproveitar para lançar seu livro mais recente em outro evento social “instagramável”.
Durante os intermináveis festejos, ocorre um assassinato. Como um acontecimento tão vulgar ousou estragar o cenário idílico e paradisíaco dos Winburys?
Há muita coisa boa em THE PERFECT COUPLE. Algumas originais, outras nem tanto. Deixar certa dúvida sobre “quem morreu?” é uma estratégia já bem utilizada mas que funciona.
Claro que o tradicionalíssimo “quem matou?” jamais perde seu charme de prender o espectador à narrativa.
Liv Schreiber (ótimo), Eve Henson, Billy Hohle, Meghann Fahy, Michael Beach, Dakota Fanning, uma quase irreconhecível Isabelle Adjani, Ishaan Khattar, Jack Reynor, Sam Nivola, Donna Lynne Champlin e Tim Bailey fazem um cast excelente.
A série lança um olhar evidentemente crítico a tanta gastança e desapego ao mundo real. As corridas de final de tarde (onde as mentiras familiares se ampliam), as traições sem fim dos casais, o racismo, xenofobia e preconceitos cotidianos, o uso demasiado de drogas lícitas e ilícitas, a prática sistemática de mentiras, a sucessão de eventos sociais tão opulentos quanto hipócritas, o desprezo a quem não nada em dinheiro, tudo é desmascarado pela câmera ácida e cruel da série. A abertura com a dancinha coletiva é simplesmente deliciosa.
Evidentemente, o cinema já fez autópsias muito mais elaboradas, profundas e contundentes da vida dos ricos e famosos.
Mas THE PERFECT COUPLE funciona bem demais.
Acho que os seis capítulos encerram uma trama muito mais social que policial. Mas o trabalho agrada nas duas vertentes.

The plot focuses on a family that used to be called “rich people”, who are preparing the wedding of one of their sons to a “commoner” in their summer mansion on the sophisticated island of Nantucket.

During the endless celebrations, a murder occurs. How could such a vulgar event dare to ruin the idyllic and paradisiacal setting of the Winburys?
There are many good things in THE PERFECT COUPLE. Some original, others not so much. Leaving some doubt about “who died?” is a well-used strategy that works.
Of course, the traditional “who killed?” never loses its charm of keeping the viewer hooked on the narrative.
Liv Schreiber (great), Eve Henson, Billy Hohle, Meghann Fahy, Michael Beach, Dakota Fanning, an almost unrecognizable Isabelle Adjani, Ishaan Khattar, Jack Reynor, Sam Nivola, Donna Lynne Champlin and Tim Bailey make up an excellent cast.
The series takes a clearly critical look at so much spending and detachment from the real world. The late afternoon runs (where family lies are magnified), the endless betrayals of couples, the usual prejudices, racism and xenofoby, the excessive use of legal and illegal drugs, the systematic practice of lies, the succession of social events as opulent as hypocritical, the contempt for those who do not swim in money, everything is unmasked by the series’ acid and cruel camera. The opening with the collective dance is simply delightful.
Evidently, cinema has already performed much more elaborate, profound and forceful autopsies of the lives of the rich and famous.
But THE PERFECT COUPLE works really well.
I think the six chapters wrap up a plot that is much more social than police-related. But the work is pleasing in both aspects.
