Como o western é um gênero cinematográfico raro hoje em dia, os últimos filmes do gênero se prestam a homenagear os clássicos, normalmente com histórias e personagens que transitam por ambientes magníficos cavalgando e dando tiros em tramas desencantadas e nostálgicas.
Está em cartaz na Apple TV+, a produção canadense THE THICKET, dirigida pelo cineasta Elliot Lester, que anos atrás fez sucesso no circuito de festivais com o original filme NIGHTNGALE.
THE THICKET conta a história de uma mulher que é sequestrada – depois de perdes os pais em uma peste – por uma bandoleira bem original: Cut Throat Bill, vivida maravilhosamente por Juliette Lewis. Aos 51 anos, Lewis segue sendo a mesma atriz intrigante que fascinava Robert De Niro em O CABO DO MEDO. Ser a vilã protagonista do filme já um motivo para se ver THE THICKET.
O irmão da raptada Lula Parker (Esme Creed-Miles) passa a ser procurada por seu irmão Jack (Levon Hawke, filho de Ethan e Uma Thurman). Ele contrata um verdadeiro exército de Brancaleone para ir atrás da irmã.
Eles são o caçador de recompensas Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage sempre espetacular), o ex-escravo Eustace Hollow (Gbenga Akinnagbe) e a prostituta Jimmie Sue (Leslie Grace).
Outa originalidade da história é que a paisagem sempre imponente dos westerns aqui são completamente cobertos de neve, o que dificulta ainda mais a caçada aos heróis mambembes em busca da sequestrada e da vilã.
Sou fascinado confesso pelo western. Um dia desses, sem sono fui rever a obra prima OS IMPERDOÁVEIS, de Clint Eastwood. Merece todos os prêmios e elogios que ganhou. Clássico eterno.
Evidente que THE THICKET não chega a esse nível.
Mas me surpreendeu pela excelência de sua trama, personagens e cenas.
O poder do western, seus heróis e vilões seguem intactos.

The Canadian production THE THICKET is currently showing on Apple TV+, directed by filmmaker Elliot Lester, who years ago was a hit on the festival circuit with the original film NIGHTNGALE.
THE THICKET tells the story of a woman who is kidnapped – after losing her parents to a plague – by a very original bandit: Cut Throat Bill, played wonderfully by Juliette Lewis. At 51 years old, Lewis is still the same intriguing actress who fascinated Robert De Niro in CAPE FEAR. Being the main villain of the film is already a reason to watch THE THICKET. The brother of the kidnapped Lula Parker (Esme Creed-Miles) is now being sought by her brother Jack (Levon Hawke, son of Ethan and Uma Thurman). He hires a veritable army of Brancaleone to go after his sister.
They are the bounty hunter Reginald Jones (Peter Dinklage, always spectacular), the former slave Eustace Hollow (Gbenga Akinnagbe) and the prostitute Jimmie Sue (Leslie Grace).
Another originality of the story is that the always imposing landscape of the westerns here is completely covered in snow, which makes it even more difficult for the heroes to hunt down the kidnapped girl and the villain.
I confess that I am fascinated by the western. One of these days, without sleep, I went to rewatch the masterpiece UNFORGIVEN, by Clint Eastwood. It deserves all the awards and praise it has won. An eternal classic.
Obviously, THE THICKET does not reach that level.
But it surprised me with the excellence of its plot, characters and scenes.
The power of the western, its heroes and villains remain intact.
