Em 1980, o genial cineasta inglês Stanley Kubrick levou para as telas o romance O ILUMINADO, do escritor Stephen King, contando a história de um escritor contratado para cuidar de um hotel de luxo nas montanhas que fica um longo período fechado durante o inverno. Ele se muda para lá com a mulher e o filho. O processo de loucura em que ele entra proporcionou ao escritor e ao cineasta um material precioso para discorrer sobre a mente humana.
Jack Nicholson (em um dos seus maiores trabalhos) faz o escritor Jack Torrance. Shelley Duvall vive Wendy Torrance, sua esposa. E o menino Danny Lloyd vive Danny o filho que vai encarar o terror. Um elenco perfeito dirigido por um gênio do cinema conseguiu um filme inesquecível.
Falar de Kubrick como cineasta genial é chover no molhado. O diretor fez meia dúzia de obras primas, filmes históricos como GLÓRIA FEITA DE SANGUE, SPARTACUS, 2001, UMA ODISSEIA NO ESPAÇO, DR. FANTÁSTICO, LARANJA MECÂNICA, BARRY LINDON, NASCIDO PARA MATAR e DE OLHOS BEM FECHADOS.
O gênero do filme de terror talvez tenha sido um dos maiores desafios de Kubrick, uma vez que muitos cineastas sucumbem a efeitos especiais, excesso de violência explícita e perdem a mão. O ILUMINADO é uma obra memorável pelo clima de terror absoluto que cria, certamente a partir da história excelente de King, mas contando com a genialidade e criatividade do mestre.
O ILUMINADO é um filme tão perfeito, que se recomenda mesmo a quem não é aficcionado ou apaixonado pelos filmes de terror.
Agora está em produção o filme DOUTOR SONO (DOCTOR SLEEP), dirigido por Mike Flannagan, um jovem americano conhecido por seu trabalho na série de TV ABSENTIA. É muito importante dizer que Flannagan tem muita experiência como montador, um dos segredos de um ótimo filme de terror.
O roteiro também de autoria de Mike Flannagan é baseado em um novo romance de Stephen King, contando que o agora adulto Danny Torrance (aqui interpretado pelo ótimo Ewan McGregor) que encontra uma jovem com os mesmos poderes extra-sensoriais dele, a excelente atriz sueca Rebecca Fergusson (MISSÃO IMPOSSÍVEL: NAÇÃO SECRETA). Ainda no elenco, o menino canadense Jacob Tremblay (O QUARTO DE JACK).
O lançamento de DOUTOR SONO vai ser em 07 de novembro de 2019. Parece evidente que esta sequencia – como a maioria delas – vai ser inferior ao original. Afinal, não tem Kubrick.

He moves there with his wife and son. The process of madness in which he enters has provided the writer and filmmaker with precious material to talk about the human mind.
Jack Nicholson (in one of his greatest works) plays writer Jack Torrance. Shelley Duvall lives Wendy Torrance, his wife. And the boy Danny Lloyd lives Danny the son who will face terror. A perfect cast directed by a movie genius has achieved an unforgettable movie.
To talk about Kubrick as a genius filmmaker is to say the obvious. The director made half a dozen masterpieces, historical films such as PATHS OF GLORY, SPARTACUS, 2001 A SPACE ODISSEY, DOCTOR STRANGELOVE, CLOCKWORK ORANGE, BARRY LINDON, BORN TO KILL and EYES WIDE SHUT.
The horror movie genre may have been one of Kubrick’s biggest challenges, as many filmmakers succumb to special effects, over-explicit violence and lose their hands. THE SHINNING is a memorable work for the climate of absolute terror it creates, certainly from King’s excellent story, but relying on the master’s genius and creativity. It is such a perfect movie that it is recommended even to those who are not passionate about horror movies.
Now it is in production DOCTOR SLEEP, directed by Mike Flannagan, a young American known for his work on the ABSENTIA TV series. It’s very important to say that Flannagan has a lot of experience as an editor, one of the secrets of a great horror movie.
Mike Flannagan’s screenplay is based on a new Stephen King novel, telling that now adult Danny Torrance (played here by the great Ewan McGregor) meets a young woman with his same extrasensory powers work of the excellent Swedish actress Rebecca Fergusson (MISSION IMPOSSIBLE: SECRET NATION). Still in the cast, Canadian boy Jacob Tremblay (THE ROOM).
DOCTOR SLEEP will be released on November 7th, 2019. It seems evident that this sequence – like most of them – will be inferior to the original. After all, there is no Kubrick.
