SAINT JUDY, de Sean Hanish conta a história real da advogada especializada em imigração (e direitos humanos) Judy Wood, que lutou muito para estabelecer sua prática em Los Angeles, California. Lançado em marcó de 2019 e hoje estando no Amazon Prime Video e na Apple TV+, SAINT JUDY tem um tom quase documental.
Nestes tempos em que os imigrantes e refugiados estão sob ameaça em muitas latitudes, SAINT JUDE traz a história do caso (e da advogada) que alterou a Lei de Asilo Político nos EUA, introduzindo pela primeira vez o conceito de perseguição de mulheres por suas opiniões políticas e não por seu sexo. Ela é Michelle Monaghan, a atriz de GONE BABY GONE e TRUE DETECTIVE. Seu trabalho reproduz com fidelidade extrema a resiliência e deterrminação da advogada em defesa de seus clientes.
O leading case foi de um mulher afegã, presa e violentada por guardas do Talibã, que voa para os Estados Unidos e pede asilo. A decisão de primeiro grau indefere o pedido de asilo, fundamentando que as mulheres não são um grupo político ou uma minoria. No apelo, a advogada conseguiu reverter o resultado, garantindo o asilo para a afegã Asefa Ashwary (ótimo trabalho da atriz palestina Leem Lubany (a assustadora assassina da série CONDOR) sob o argumento de que ela foi perseguida por suas convicções e opiniões políticas e não por ser mulher.
A decisão marcou época, assegurando a inúmeras mulheres o deferimento de seus pedidos de asilo nos EUA.
No elenco há ótimos atores e atrizes: Alfred Molina, o excelente ator inglês de FRIDA e MAGNOLIA pontifica como o advogado Ray Hernandez, que dá o primeiro emprego a Judy; a fora de série atriz Alfre Woodward, como a Juíza Benton; e o também maravilhoso ator e rapper Common (visto em O PROCURADO e SELMA). Eles fazem um cast espetacular que dá vida ao filme.
SAINT JUDY é mais um filme que extrai elementos de empatia do fato de contar uma história real. Isto dá credibilidade e emotividade à história, por si só plena de elementos humanos envolventes. A questão da luta por direitos de minorias é outro ponto de cativante envolvimento a favor do filme.
O filme não é apenas mais um drama de tribunal. aliás, as cenas dentro de cortes são poucas e tomam pouco tempo de filme. Na realidade a batalha jurídica maior se trava nas ruas e no pequeno escritório da protagonista. Ali é o verdadeiro campo de batalha do direito.
SAINT JUDY é um belo filme e merece muito ser visto.

In these times when immigrants and refugees are under threat in many latitudes, SAINT JUDE brings the story of the case (and the lawyer) that changed the interpretation of the Political Asylum Act in the US, introducing for the first time the concept of persecution of women by their political opinions and not by their gender. She is Michelle Monaghan, the actress of GONE BABY GONE and TRUE DETECTIVE. Her work reproduces with extreme fidelity the lawyer’s resilience and determination in defense of her clients.
The leading case was an Afghan woman arrested and raped by Taliban guards, who flies to the United States and seeks asylum. The first-degree decision rejects the asylum application on the ground that women are not a political group or a minority. In the appeal, the lawyer succeeded in reversing the outcome by securing asylum for Afghan Asefa Ashwary (great job of Palestinian actress Leem Lubany, the scary killer of the CONDOR series) on the grounds that she was persecuted for her political beliefs and opinions and not for being a woman.
The decision marked a time, ensuring many women were granted their asylum applications in the US.
There are great actors and actresses in the cast: Alfred Molina, the excellent English actor from FRIDA and MAGNOLIA pontificates as lawyer Ray Hernandez, who gives Judy his first job; outstanding actress Alfre Woodward, like Judge Benton; and the also wonderful actor and rapper Common (seen in Wanted and Selma). They make a spectacular cast that brings the movie to life.
SAINT JUDY is yet another film that extracts elements of empathy from telling a true story. This lends credibility and emotionality to the story, itself full of surrounding human elements. The issue of the fight for minority rights is another captivating point in favor of the film.
The movie is not just another court drama. Incidentally, the court scenes are few and take little film time. In fact the biggest legal battle is going on in the streets and in the protagonist’s small office. This is the real battlefield of law.
SAINT JUDY is a beautiful movie and deserves a lot to be seen.
