Lawrence Block é um escritor americano de enorme sucesso. Seu personagem mais famoso é o do ex-policial alcoólatra Matt Scudder que virou P.I. depois que uma ação dele contra três ladrões inadvertidamente resultou na morte de uma menina. Os livros de Block investem em tramas complexas, onde o pior do ser humano vem à tona.
Há um outro filme com o personagem de Scudder (vivido por Jeff Bridges. Trata-se de MORRER MIL VEZES (8 MILLION WAYS TO DIE), que Hal Ashby dirigiu em 1986. Mas este é assunto para outro post.
CAÇADA MORTAL (A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES), de Scott Frank é um filme policial super dark, onde Scudder vai atrás de uma dupla de malucos que sequestra mulheres e, depois de abusá-las as mata com requintes de crueldade e as esquarteja.
Liam Neeson (que anda em baixa, mas tem aqui um trabalho bem razoável), Maurice Compte, Luciano Acuña Jr., Laura Birn, David Harbour e Adam David Thompson fazem um elenco que acho que ficou abaixo do que a história de Block mereceria.
Scott Frank, um roteirista acima da média (MINORITY REPORT e LOGAN) tem se aventurado na direção, saindo melhor nas séries (é um dos diretores das ótima O GAMBITO DA RAINHA e GODLESS, ambas da NETFLIX). Aqui, na minha opinião, poderia ter ousado mais. Preferiu ficar em terreno mais seguro e empobreceu o texto do livro (o que é muito comum).
A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES tem várias coisas boas. A maioria acho que atribuíveis mais ao livro que ao filme. Mas dá para ver tranquilamente.

A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES, by Scott Frank is a super dark detective film, where Scudder goes after a pair of crazy people who kidnap women and, after abusing them, kills them with cruelty refinements and cuts them apart.
Liam Neeson (who is down, but has a very reasonable job here), Maurice Compte, Luciano Acuña Jr., Laura Birn, David Harbor and Adam David Thompson make a cast that I think was below what Block’s story would deserve.
Scott Frank, an above-average screenwriter (MINORITY REPORT and LOGAN) has ventured into directing, doing better in the series (he is one of the directors of the great QUEEN’S GAMBIT and GODLESS, both from NETFLIX). Here, in my opinion, I could have dared more. He preferred to stay on safer ground and depleted the text of the book (which is very common).
WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES has a lot of good things. Most I think are more attributable to the book than to the film. But you can see it with no fear.
