A espetacular série original da Amazon Prime Video chegou a sua quarta e final temporada.
A terceira temporada tinha sido tão emocionante que eu achei (e escrevi no CINEMARCO) que achava que tinha sido o final das histórias do advogado alcoólatra Billy McBride, um obstinado defensor de clientes fracos e oprimidos contra pessoas e empresas poderosas.
Eu não tenho dúvidas de que a primeira temporada foi a melhor de todas. Ali estão todas as raízes, os valores e os problemas de Billy e de seus parceiros de desventuras, a incrível ex-prostituta Tiffany (Tania Raymonde em seu melhor papel disparado) e a notável advogada Patty Solis-Papagian (ótima criação da atriz Nina Arianda). Frente a este trio, nenhum vilão terá descanso. Eles não têm medida para desmascarar e conseguir a punição dos bad guys, haja o que houver.
Nesta quarta história da turma, Billy vai enfrentar uma super poderosa empresa farmacêutica, bilionária por seu sucesso no mercado de remédios opiáceos contra a dor, que viciam e vitimam milhares de pessoas pelo mundo todos os anos.
O vilão da vez é um notável George Zax (J.K.Simmons como sempre excelente). Ele faz de tudo: mata, rapta, interna, canta e dança, mente, corrompe, enfim tudo que lhe mantenha à frente do império de painkillers.
Há um segundo personagem espetacular: o irmão esquizofrênico de George, Frank Zax, um dos melhores papeis do veteraníssimo Bruce Dern em décadas. Apesar da loucura, Frank, ao contrário do irmão, mantém sua humanidade intacta mesmo em meio a tamanha podridão. Seus diálogos com Billy são notáveis.
Os produtores tiverem mais uma ideia genial nesta temporada final: há citações explícitas de filmes clássicos nos delírios e pesadelos do advogado Billy McBride. MATAR OU MORRER, LADRÃO DE CASACA, UM CORPO QUE CAI, CHINATOWN, JANELA INDISCRETA, O SHOW DEVE CONTINUAR, só para citar alguns. Para o cinéfilo, o prazer de descobrir estas citações é um bônus de prazer sem igual.
Claro que a força motriz principal de GOLIATH é a interpretação de Billy Bob Thornton. As mazelas do advogado – em especial o alcoolismo e a raiva incontida contra a injustiça – parecem que foram esperados há muito tempo pelo ator, soberbo em sua arte. O papel de um paladino dos excluídos é o melhor de uma carreira cheia de personagens notáveis. Nem no papel que lhe deu o Oscar em NA CORDA BAMBA (SLING BLADE) Billy Bob esteve tão maravilhoso. Aqui o personagem e o ator se fundem em um só, de modo perfeito.
O sentimento, no final do oitavo episódio, é o mesmo de Tiffany e Patty. A gente tem vontade de dar um abraço em Billy e agradecer por ele existir.
Amazon’s spectacular original prime Video series has reached its fourth and final season.
The third season had been so emotional that I thought (and wrote in CINEMARCO) that I thought it was the end of the stories of alcoholic lawyer Billy McBride, a stubborn lawyer of weak and downtrodden clients against powerful people and companies.
I have no doubt that the first season was the best ever. There are all the roots, values and issues of Billy and his fellow misfortunes, the incredible ex-prostitute Tiffany (Tania Raymonde in her best shot role) and the noted lawyer Patty Solis-Papagian (great creation by actress Nina Arianda). In front of this trio, no villain will have rest. They have no measure to unmask and get the bad guys punished, no matter what.
In this fourth class story, Billy will face a super powerful pharmaceutical company, billionaire for its success in the opioid pain medicine market, which addict and victimize thousands of people around the world every year.
The villain this time is a notable George Zax (J.K.Simmons as always excellent). He does everything: kills, kidnaps, intern, sings and dances, lies, corrupts, in short everything that keeps him at the head of the painkiller empire.
There is a second spectacular character: George’s schizophrenic brother Frank Zax, one of the best roles of veteran Bruce Dern in decades. Despite the madness, Frank, unlike his brother, keeps his humanity intact even in the midst of such rot. His dialogues with Billy are remarkable.
The producers have one more genius idea this season finale: there are explicit quotes from classic movies in lawyer Billy McBride’s ravings and nightmares. HIGH NOON, TO CATCH A THIEF, VERTIGO, CHINATOWN, REAR WINDOW, ALL THAT JAZZ, just to name a few. For the movie buff, the pleasure of discovering these quotes is a bonus of unparalleled pleasure.
Of course the main driving force behind GOLIATH is the portrayal of Billy Bob Thornton. The lawyer’s ailments – especially alcoholism and unrestrained rage against injustice – seem to have been long awaited by the actor, who is superb in his art. The role of an outcast champion is the best of a career full of notable characters. Not even in his Oscar-winning role in SLING BLADE Billy Bob was this wonderful. Here the character and the actor merge seamlessly into one.
The feeling, at the end of episode eight, is the same as Tiffany and Patty. We want to give Billy a hug and thank him for existing.
