O cineasta indiano M. Night Shyamalan tem um problema em sua carreira hoje já com 19 filmes. O terceiro trabalho dele como diretor é, disparadamente, seu melhor filme. Está certo que O SEXTO SENTIDO foi um filme em que tudo deu certo. Mas o roteiro, do próprio Shyamalan (“Eu vejo pessoas mortas”) era tão perfeito que hoje, 22 anos depois segue imbatível no primeiro lugar da carreira do cineasta.
TEMPO (OLD), seu mais recente filme, como muitos dos outros, tem um ponto de partida interessante. Um grupo de hóspedes de um resort paradisíaco na República Dominicana recebe uma oferta de ir conhecer uma praia isolada e deserta, de uma beleza sem par. Eles embarcam para lá, mas logo ao chegar, se dão conta que algo está errado, muito errado.
Naquele local, o tempo passa mais rápido. Um dia a cada duas horas. As consequências são trágicas. E pior, não há como sair de lá.
Shyamalan, um apaixonado pelo fantástico e pelo sobrenatural, tem procurado nos últimos trabalhos, deixar uma porta aberta para uma explicação natural dos fatos ocorridos. Isto lhe impõe, por vezes, forçar a barra.
O elenco de OLD é muito bom. O ator mexicano Gael Garcia Bernal lidera o cast, em que estão Rufus Sewell, Vicky Krieps (nascida em Luxemburgo), Alex Wolff, Thomasin McKenzie, a modelo Abbey Lee (do último MAD MAX), Ken Leung, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Elisa Scanen, Aaron Pierre, Embeth Davidtz (A LISTA DE SCHINDLER) e Francesca Eastwood (filha de Clint com a atriz Frances Fisher).
É inegável que Shyamalan (que aparece em todos os seus filmes à la Hitchcock) tem talento suficiente para prender a atenção do espectador até o final. A gente quer muito saber como vai terminar a história.
Mas fica uma sensação frustrante de que outra vez, o diretor ensaiou e não chegou nem perto de sua obra prima. Acho que nunca vai chegar.

It’s true that THE SIXTH SENSE was a movie in which everything worked out. But the script, by Shyamalan himself (“I see dead people”) was so perfect that today, 22 years later, it remains unbeatable in the first place in the filmmaker’s career.
OLD, his latest film, like many of the others, has an interesting starting point. A group of guests from a paradise resort in the Dominican Republic receives an offer to visit a secluded and deserted beach, of unparalleled beauty. They board there, but as soon as they arrive, they realize that something is wrong, very wrong.
In that place, time passes faster. One day every two hours. The consequences are tragic. And worse, there is no way out of there.
Shyamalan, passionate about the fantastic and the supernatural, has been looking in recent works to leave a door open for a natural explanation of what happened. This, sometimes, force him to hit the bar.
OLD’s cast is very good. It is undeniable that Shyamalan (who appears in all of his films à la Hitchcock) has enough talent to hold the viewer’s attention until the end. We really want to know how the story will end.
But there’s a frustrating feeling again, the director has rehearsed and hasn’t even come close to his masterpiece. I don’t think it will ever come.
