O diretor holandês Paul Verhoeven sempre quis dar a sua carreira um tom escandaloso. O primeiro filme dele que eu vi foi O QUARTO HOMEM, em uma Mostra Internacional de São Paulo. Era delirante e tinha uma dúzia de cenas pouco vistas no cinema normal.
O melhor filme de Verhoeven é, na minha opinião, INSTINTO SELVAGEM. O thriller com Sharon Stone (luminosa e sem calcinha) e Michael Douglas, marcou época pela violência e pelas cenas de sexo quase explícito que estão apenas nas versões mais adultas do filme.
O pior filme dele é SHOWGIRLS. A vida da stripper Nomi Malone, vivida por Elizabeth Berkley é muito ruim, um “exploitation” total, quase um pornô de baixa qualidade.
Pois neste 2021, aos 83 anos, Verhoeven volta às manchetes com outro filme escândalo: BENEDETTA. Uma jovem italiana rica entra em um mosteiro de freiras e passa a ter visões eróticas e violentas com Jesus Cristo. Milagre ou delírio?
O filme é baseado no livro da autora americana Judit C. Brown, intitulado “Atos Imodestos: A Vida de uma Freira Lésbica na Renascença Italiana”. Dá para ter uma ideia do conteúdo.
O filme é baseado na figura real da freira Benedetta Carlini, a Abadessa do Mosteiro da cidade de Pescia, Itália, que se notabilizou por visões controversas e relações homoafetivas.
Com este material em mãos, Verhoeven foi à luta. O filme é um desfile de perversões, alucinações impressionantes, lesbianismo a granel, masturbação com e sem uso de artefatos (uma das polêmicas é a utilização de uma imagem de Nossa Senhora), stigmatas, torturas de todas as espécies, peste negra (que já marcara um filme de Verhoeven, FLESH + BLOOD), doenças incuráveis, psicoses, suicídios, açoitamentos e por aí vai.
O elenco tem a atriz belga Virginie Éfira, em atuação para lá de desinibida. Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson, Daphne Patakia, Louise Chevillotte compõem um elenco bem ao estilo do holandês.
Não se pode dizer que Verhoeven não saiba filmar, ser inovador e polêmico. Este é o mundo onde ele se sente à vontade. As alfinetadas na Igreja e suas idiossincrasias – a toda hora presentes no filme – que o digam.
As alucinações eróticas de Benedetta, com um Cristo guerreiro e armado de uma espada usada para degolar infiéis e serpentes são sempre instigantes e provocativas.
Custei a encontrar o filme. Achei em uma plataforma de streaming europeia. Valeu a pena.

Verhoeven’s best film is, in my opinion, BASIC INSTINCT. The thriller with Sharon Stone (bright and pantiless) and Michael Douglas, marked an era for the violence and the almost explicit sex scenes that are only in the more adult versions of the film.

The film is a parade of perversions, impressive hallucinations, bulk lesbianism, masturbation with and without the use of artifacts (one of the controversies is the use of an image of Mary), stigmata, torture of all kinds, black plague (which already he had in a Verhoeven movie, FLESH + BLOOD), incurable illnesses, psychoses, suicides, floggings and so on.
The cast has the Belgian actress Virginie Éphira, acting beyond uninhibited. Charlotte Rampling, Lambert Wilson, Daphne Patakia, Louise Chevillotte make a cast like Verhoeven likes.
It cannot be said that Verhoeven does not know how to make films, being innovative and controversial. This is the world where he feels at ease. The needlings in the Church and their idiosyncrasies – all the time present in the film – may say so.
Benedetta’s erotic hallucinations, with a warrior Christ armed with a sword used to slay infidels and serpents, are always provocative.
It took me a while to find the movie. I found it on a European streaming platform. Worth it.
