Sempre olho o Telecine Cult. Volta e meia para na hora para rever algum filme clássico que faz tempos que não assisto.
Ontem foi a vez de SEM LEI E SEM ALMA (GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL), de John Sturges, um western clássico feito em 1957.
O episódio real do confronto entre o lendário Xerife Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) e a Família Clanton no lugar conhecido como O.K. Curral é um episódio histórico do faroeste que já rendeu vários filmes e, inclusive, documentários.
Nenhum chegou ao nível deste GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL.
O elenco é especial. Além de Burt Lancaster, tem Kirk Douglas, como Doc Holliday, um de seus melhores papéis. Ainda tem Dennis Hopper (Billy Clanton), Jon Ireland (Johnny Ringo), Lyle Bettger (Ike Clanton), Earl Holliman, Whit Bissell, Lee van Cleef. As mulheres são Rhonda Fleming e Jo Van Fleet.
A construção da tensão extrema do confronto final é feita brilhantemente. Há meia dúzia de entreveros entre os Clanton e a família Earp, até o assassinato do irmão mais jovem de Wyatt Earp que torna inevitável o duelo armado.
O roteiro do filme, nada mais nada menos que de autoria de Leon Uris é baseado em um artigo de George Sculin sobre o que teria acontecido em O.K. Corral. Tem linhas clássicas como o moribundo Doc Holliday, consumido pela doença que afirma “se é para morrer que ao menos seja ao lado de um amigo.”
O star power de Lancaster e Douglas é pesado mesmo, Os dois seguram o filme lá em cima, o tempo todo.
GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL por muitos fundados motivos virou um clássico.
I always look at the Telecine Cult. Every now and then, I stop by to review some classic movie I haven’t watched in a while.
Yesterday it was the turn of GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL, by John Sturges, a classic western made in 1957.
The real-life showdown between the legendary Sheriff Wyatt Earp (Burt Lancaster) and the Clanton Family at the place known as O.K. Curral is a historic episode of the western that has already resulted in several films and even documentaries.
None has reached the level of this GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL.
The cast is special. In addition to Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas as Doc Holliday is one of his best roles. There’s still Dennis Hopper (Billy Clanton), Jon Ireland (Johnny Ringo), Lyle Bettger (Ike Clanton), Earl Holliman, Whit Bissell, Lee van Cleef. The women are Rhonda Fleming and Jo Van Fleet.
Building the extreme tension of the final showdown is done brilliantly. There are half a dozen clashes between the Clantons and the Earp family, up to the murder of Wyatt Earp’s younger brother that makes gunfighting inevitable.
The film’s screenplay, written by Leon Uris, is based on an article by George Sculin about what would have happened in O.K. Corral. It has classic lines like the dying Doc Holliday, consumed by illness who says “if you’re going to die, at least it’s with a friend.”
Lancaster and Douglas’ star power is really heavy, they both hold the film up there the entire time.
GUNFIGHT AT THE O.K. CORRAL for many reasons has become a classic.
