Neste domingo à noite, resolvi me dar um presente. Assisti pela enésima vez À BEIRA DO ABISMO (THE BIG SLEEP), filme que o mestre Howard Hawks fez em 1946, com Humphrey Bogart e Lauren Bacall.
O material para o filme não podia ser melhor. O romance clássico de Raymond Chandler foi adaptado por nada menos que William Faulkner, Leigh Brackett e Jules Furthman e virou um cult movie permanente.
Bogart é o P.I. Philip Marlowe, contratado pelo rico e doente General Sternwood (Charles Waldron) para tratar de um caso de chantagem por dívidas de jogo contra sua filha caçula, a ousada e sensual Carmen Sternwood (Martha Vickers, ótima). Mas na casa dos Sternwoods quem diz como a banda toca é a filha mais velha, Vivian Rutledge (um desempenho antológico de Lauren Bacall, linda demais).
Marlowe vai se envolver em um caso muito mais intrincado que a mera chantagem por dívidas de jogo.
O elenco – excelente – tem ainda John Ridgely, Dorothy Malone, Peggy Knudsen, Regis Toomey, Elisha Cook Jr. e Charles D. Brown.
Como um filme noir que se preza, THE BIG SLEEP tem uma trama complexa, mulheres fatais, tiroteios e traições a granel.
Humphrey Bogart foi um dos principais galãs do auge do star system. Além de THE BIG SLEEP, fez outros 83 filmes, entre os quais CASABLANCA, O FALCÃO MALTÊS e UMA AVENTURA NA ÁFRICA. Um monstro nas telas. Seu Philip Marlowe é certamente uma das melhores versões do detetive clássico de Chandler.
THE BIG SLEEP é um filme que se vê ou revê com imenso prazer. Cada vez, parece mais perfeito.
This Sunday night, I decided to give myself a gift. I watched for the umpteenth time THE BIG SLEEP, a film that the master Howard Hawks made in 1946, with Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall.
The material for the film couldn’t have been better. Raymond Chandler‘s classic novel was adapted by none other than William Faulkner, Leigh Brackett and Jules Furthman and became a permanent cult movie.
Bogart is the P.I. Philip Marlowe, hired by wealthy and ailing General Sternwood (Charles Waldron) to handle a blackmail case for gambling debts against his youngest daughter, the daring and sensual Carmen Sternwood (Martha Vickers, great). But at the Sternwoods’ house, the eldest daughter Vivian Rutledge (an anthological performance by Lauren Bacall, too beautiful) says how the band plays.
Marlowe will be involved in a case far more intricate than mere blackmail for gambling debts.

As a self-respecting film noir, THE BIG SLEEP has a complex plot, fatal women, gunfights and betrayals in bulk.
Humphrey Bogart was one of the leading man of the star system’s heyday. In addition to THE BIG SLEEP, he made 83 other films, including CASABLANCA, THE MALTESE FALCON and THE AFRICAN QUEEN. A monster of the screens. His Philip Marlowe is certainly one of the best versions of Chandler’s classic detective.
