O HULU está exibindo o filme EVERY LAST SECRET, que o cineasta Matthew Coppola (não é parente de Francis Ford) fez em 2022. Só no IMDB, o filme aparece com três títulos: EVERY LAST SECRET, BROKEN SOLDIER e ALONE.
Quem lê sobre cinema há mais tempos, sabe que o fato de um filme mudar de título indica problemas à vista. São raros os projetos que trocam de nome e fazem sucesso.
EVERY LAST SECRET narra a história de um veterano da Guerra do Golfo que volta a Nova Iorque com PTSD ou Síndrome Pós-Traumática. Freeman Bender (o produtor e ator Mark Kassen) tem muita dificuldade em se controlar e está sempre a um segundo de se tornar violento. Toma medicação pesada, vive sozinho em um pequeno apartamento pago pelo Governo, corre nas madrugadas e tem seu único prazer nas visitas ocasionais da escort girl Elly (a bósnia Ivana Milicevic de BANSHEE).
Freeman vai cruzar com a adolescente Penelope (Sophie Turner, em trabalho interessante), 17 anos, uma estudante de teatro de família rica, que mora em uma cobertura no East Side, mas prefere nas horas vagas, perambular com os colegas na zona pobre de cidade, onde fumam, usam drogas e bebem como se fossem maiores de idade.
Penelope e Freeman vão formar uma relação inesperada. Ele tem um carinho surpreendente por ela, a tal ponto que se recusa a transar porque ela é menor. A relação platônica dos dois é o melhor que o filme traz. Os dois andando, à noite, por Manhattan proporcionam ao espectador cenas lindas.
Há ainda a rica e destrambelhada família de Penelope, o empresário Mr Ancilla (Ray Liotta) e sua esposa (Meadow Williams), que levam a vida em jantares familiares tensos e um certo descaso com o pai dele (Mark Margolis), já demonstrando sinais de velhice.
A interface entre estes dois mundos não poderia sair bem.
E acho que foi onde o filme escorregou. A história do relacionamento de Freeman e Penelope poderia dar um bom filme. A interação deles com a família dela não tinha como dar certo.
Afundou o filme. Ficou um drama comum e pesado.

Freeman Bender (producer and actor Mark Kassen) has a hard time controlling himself and is always one second away from becoming violent. He takes heavy medication, lives alone in a small apartment paid for by the government, runs late at night and takes his only pleasure in the occasional visit from the escort girl Elly (the Bosnian Ivana Milicevic of BANSHEE).
Freeman will cross paths with teenager Penelope (Sophie Turner, in interesting work), 17, a theater student from a wealthy family, who lives in a penthouse on the East Side, but prefers in her spare time, to roam with her colleagues in the poor part of city, where they smoke, use drugs and drink as if they were of legal age.
Penelope and Freeman will form an unexpected relationship. He has a surprising affection for her, to the point that he refuses to have sex because she is underage. The platonic relationship of the two is the best that the film brings. The two walking through Manhattan at night provide the viewer with beautiful scenes.
There’s also Penelope’s rich and deranged family, businessman Mr Ancilla (Ray Liotta) and his wife (Meadow Williams), who live their lives in tense family dinners and a certain disregard for his father (Mark Margolis), already showing signs of old age.
The interface between these two worlds could not go well.
And I think that’s where the film slipped. The story of Freeman and Penelope’s relationship could make a good movie. Their interaction with her family could not work.
The film sank. It became a common and heavy drama.
