As a teenager I read all nine books by writer Gregory McDonald with the character of investigative journalist Irwin Mauritius Fletcher (Fletch).
Fletch was an anarchist and very capable journalist who saw before the others when the investigated situation had its share. His nonconformity with the established rules usually put him in conflict with the bosses, who were traditionally square, lazy and resigned. Fletch was the opposite of all that.
There were two movies where Chevy Chase played Fletch. They were very weak.
Now streamings (Apple TV, Google Play, Prime Video) put the character’s new movie for rent: CONFESS, FLETCH.
Jon Hamm (MAD MEN) is an actor with enough talent to make a Fletch far superior to Chevy Chase. Director Greg Mottola (from the great SUPERBAD) knows how to mix humor and mystery in palatable measures. His movie is pure entertainment.
Lorenza Izzo (Chilean actress on the rise), Marcia Gay Harden, Kyle MacLachlan (the eternal Dale Cooper of TWIN PEAKS), Lucy Punch, John Slattery, Anna Osceola (Hamm’s wife in real life), Robert Picardo and Roy Wood Jr. make an above average cast.
Who killed the beautiful woman in Fletch’s rented flat? Who stole Fletch’s millionaire client’s art collection? Who kidnapped the seductive Angela’s father? Is the Picasso painting demanded as a ransom real?
The new FLETCH CONFESS movie took me back to the delicious memories of McDonald’s books.
I think cinema has finally done justice to Irwin Mauritius Fletcher (Fletch).
