O Clube de Cinema de Porto alegre vai exibir, na próxima terça-feira, dia 11/10/2022, às 19 horas, na UFRGS, o filme APOCALIPSE NOW, de Francis Ford Coppola.
Lembro que a primeira vez que vi APOCALIPSE NOW, foi no Cine Astor, um enorme cinema de rua em Porto Alegre, localizado na Avenida Benjamin Constant, que tinha uma tela gigante e um sistema de som muito bom.
Foi em um domingo à noite que fui extasiado naquelas duas horas e vinte e sete minutos que me transportaram de Porto Alegre aos campos inundados do Vietnam.
Fiquei hipnotizado por Marlon Brando (incrível como o Coronel Kurtz), Martin Sheen, Dennis Hooper, Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, Laurence Fishburne e Scott Glenn.
Papel essencial nesta obra prima tinha a trilha sonora de Carmine Coppola, que ia de música clássica a rock pesado, para contar a loucura da Guerra do Vietnam.
APOCALIPSE NOW tem um sem número de cenas antológicas. A mais comentada de todas, sem dúvida é dos helicópteros americanos bombardeando aldeias vietnamitas com napalm ao som de A Cavalgada das Valquírias, de Richard Wagner, um momento antológico do cinema.
Mas ainda hoje, parece que estou vendo o rosto redondo do grande Marlon Brando, visto apenas pela metade (a iluminação do mago da fotografia Vittorio Storaro deixava metade do rosto do ator no escuro) contando ao personagem de Martin Sheen que o momento em que viu que a guerra era perdia foi quando seu pelotão fez uma operação de vacinação de crianças em uma aldeia e minutos depois ao ouvir da floresta tiros e explosões retornaram à aldeia e viram com horror uma pilha de bracinhos das crianças vacinadas decepados por vietnamitas em reação contra o invasor. Terror puro.
Há alguns anos vi o documentário O APOCALIPSE DE UM CINEASTA narrando a loucura que foram as filmagens de APOCALIPSE NOW. Houve um furacão que destruiu todos os cenários, um infarto que quase matou o diretor, seguidos estouros de orçamento e substituição de atores em meio ao filme. Foi uma das produções mais tumultuadas de todos os tempos. Imagina o filme que seria não fosse isto tudo. Ou não.
Cada vez mais acho APOCALYPSE NOW um dos melhores filmes de guerra que o cinema já fez, ao lado de obras como GLÓRIA FEITA DE SANGUE, O FRANCO ATIRADOR e outras deste calibre.
O filme só não é o melhor que Francis Coppola fez na vida, porque existe um tal O PODEROSO CHEFÃO que está no paraíso dos filmes perfeitos.
Com certeza, saí do Cine Astor uma pessoa diferente da que entrei (comprando balas azedinhas). Saí consciente do horror da guerra, da maldade humana e dos malefícios da violência e dos perigos de um imperialismo que não respeita diferenças políticas, culturais e religiosas.
APOCALYPSE NOW é um dos meus filmes inesquecíveis, tamanha a impressão que deixou em minha mente, olhos e coração.

I remember the first time I saw APOCALYPSE NOW, it was at Cine Astor, a huge street cinema in Porto Alegre, located on Avenida Benjamin Constant, which had a giant screen and a very good sound system.
It was on a Sunday night that I was ecstatic in those two hours and twenty-seven minutes that transported me from Porto Alegre to the flooded fields of Vietnam.
I was mesmerized by Marlon Brando (amazing as Colonel Kurtz), Martin Sheen, Dennis Hooper, Harrison Ford, Robert Duvall, Frederic Forrest, Sam Bottoms, Laurence Fishburne and Scott Glenn.
An essential role in this masterpiece was the soundtrack by Carmine Coppola, which ranged from classical music to hard rock, to tell the madness of the Vietnam War.
APOCALYPSE NOW has a number of anthological scenes. The most talked about of all, without a doubt, is the American helicopters bombing Vietnamese villages with napalm to the sound of The Ride of the Valkyries, by Richard Wagner, an anthological moment in cinema.
But even today, I seem to be seeing the round face of the great Marlon Brando, seen only halfway (the lighting of the photography wizard Vittorio Storaro left half of the actor’s face in darkness) telling Martin Sheen’s character that the moment he saw that the war was lost was when their platoon carried out an operation to vaccinate children in a village and minutes later, hearing gunshots and explosions from the forest, they returned to the village and saw with horror a pile of vaccinated children’s arms severed by Vietnamese in reaction against the invader. Pure terror.
A few years ago I saw the documentary THE APOCALYPSE OF A FILMMAKER narrating the madness that was the filming of APOCALYPSE NOW. There was a hurricane that destroyed all the sets, a heart attack that almost killed the director, followed by budget overruns and replacement of actors in the middle of the film. It was one of the most tumultuous productions of all time. Imagine the movie it would be if it weren’t for all this. Or not.
More and more I think APOCALYPSE NOW is one of the best war films that cinema has ever made, alongside works like PATHS OF GLORY, THE DEER HUNTER and others of this caliber.
The film is just not the best Francis Coppola has made in his life, because there is such a THE GODFATHER who is in the paradise of perfect movies.
I certainly left Cine Astor a different person than I entered (buying sour candies). I left aware of the horror of war, human evil and the harm of violence and the dangers of an imperialism that does not respect political, cultural and religious differences.
APOCALYPSE NOW is one of my unforgettable films, such an impression it left on my mind, eyes and heart.
