A Apple TV+ está exibindo o thriller WATCHER, que a cineasta californiana Chloe Okuno rodou em Bucareste, Romênia, em 2022. O filme foi muito elogiado em Sundance e no SXSW.
Um jovem casal nova iorquino se muda para Bucareste em face de uma grande oportunidade profissional que Francis (Karl Glusman) recebe na empresa de propaganda em que trabalha. Sua esposa Julia (Maika Monroe, de THE STRANGER) fica o tempo todo sozinha no grande apartamento que alugaram em um prédio antigo no centro da cidade.
Aos poucos Julia começa a ter a sensação de que está sendo observada por um vizinho do prédio em frente. O medo toma conta dela que chega a sentir seguida pelas ruas próximas ao prédio.
A sensação se acentua quando uma mulher é encontrada morta na vizinhança.
O filme de Okuno é um thriller muito bem feito. O roteiro e a direção deixam o espectador em dúvida até o final do filme se tudo não passa de paranóia decorrente do isolamento e solidão de Julia ou se o vizinho realmente é um stalker.
Três elementos do filme se destacam na brilhante construção da trama: o absoluto isolamento de Julia que não fala uma palavra de romeno e, portanto nada entende do que é falado ao seu redor, os ângulos de filmagem escolhidos pela diretora Okuno acentuando sempre a solidão de Julia e a ambientação no prédio antigo (lembra o da obra prima de Polanski O BEBÊ DE ROSEMARY), sempre úmido e sombrio.
A cena em que Julia vai a um cinema ver CHARADA, de Stanley Donen e novamente se sente seguida pelo vizinho é maravilhosa.
WATCHER é um thriller soberbo. Mostra que um ótimo filme pode ser feito a partir de um roteiro criativo, uma direção inspirada e uma atriz talentosa. Maika Monroe é a alma de WATCHER.

A young New York couple move to Bucharest in the face of a great professional opportunity that Francis (Karl Glusman) receives at the advertising company he works for. His wife Julia (The STRANGER’s Maika Monroe) is all alone in the large apartment they rented in an old building downtown.
Gradually Julia begins to have the feeling that she is being watched by a neighbor in the building opposite. Fear takes over her that she feels followed by the streets near the building.
The feeling is heightened when a woman is found dead in the neighborhood.
Okuno’s film is a very well done thriller. The script and direction leave the viewer in doubt until the end of the film if it’s all just paranoia arising from Julia’s isolation and loneliness or if the neighbor really is a stalker.
Three elements of the film stand out in the brilliant construction of the plot: the absolute isolation of Julia, who does not speak a word of Romanian and therefore understands nothing of what is being said around her, the shooting angles chosen by director Okuno, always accentuating the loneliness of Julia and the setting in the old building (reminiscent of Polanski’s masterpiece ROSEMARY’S BABY), always damp and gloomy.
The scene in which Julia goes to a movie theater to see CHARADE, by Stanley Donen and again feels herself being followed by her neighbor is wonderful.
WATCHER is a superb thriller. It shows that a great movie can be made from a creative script, inspired direction and a talented actress. Maika Monroe is the soul of WATCHER.
