Em 1830, o aparente suicídio de um cadete na academia de West Point é investigado pelo Detetive Augustus Landor (Christian Bale), com a ajuda de um cadete que despreza a tradição militar. O jovem se chama Edgar Allan Poe (Harry Melling).
O elenco do filme é impressionante. Lucy Boynton, Gillian Anderson, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Toby Jones, Timothy Spall, Hadley Robinson e Robert Duvall.
