A Apple TV+ está mostrando o western MURDER AT YELLOWSTONE CITY, que o cineasta australiano Richard Gray dirigiu em 2022.
Na pequena e falida cidade de Yellowstone, Montana, um garimpeiro irrompe no Saloon atirando para cima e anunciando aos quatro ventos que encontrou um grande veio de ouro e pepitas do metal dourado do tamanho de um punho fechado. Naquela noite ele aparece morto e o despótico Xerife local prende um ex-escravo negro que estava na cidade como suspeito pelo crime.
A prisão vai mobilizar o Pastor local (um ex-pistoleiro aposentado), a descendente de índios que cuida do estábulo local e a prostituta que mantinha um romance com o falecido. Todos parecem crer na inocência alardeada pelo acusado.
A cartilha do filme de western clássico está toda no filme, muito bem encadeada pelo roteiro e pela direção. Há a acusação ao homem errado por racismo, crimes bárbaros, duelos de egos, mulheres querendo independência, a perigosa sedução do ouro, o saloon onde tudo se passa…
O elenco é muito bom. Gabriel Byrne brilha como o Xerife tão obstinado em “purificar” a cidade quanto fechado na tese de que o ngero forasteiro deve ser o criminoso. Thomas Jane, na sua impassividade faz um Pastor em conflito entre a Palavra de Deus e as armas guardadas na gaveta. Isaiah Mustafa é Cicero um homem forte e instruído que afronta as instituições com discussões que um ex-escravo não está autorizado a ter. Richard Dreyfuss um ex-ator, hoje o barman que recita Shakespeare entre um drink e outro que serve no Saloon.
O naipe feminino é igualmente competente. Anna Campo é Alice Murphy, a esposa do Pastor que o impulsiona a deixar a inércia e provar a inocência de Cicero. Scottie Thompson é Emma a viuva com. agenda própria. Tanaya Beatty é a pessoa responsável por cuidar dos cavalos na cidade e outra a desconfiar da acusação.
Não é somente porque gosto muito de western que me agradou muito o filme de Gray. Acho que foi criado e filmado de forma muito competente.
Discute temas modernos (racismo, feminismo, ganância) em uma moldura de homenagem aos clássicos do western.
Vale a pena visitar Yellowstone. Apesar de todos os perigos que a cidadezinha oculta.

In the small, bankrupt town of Yellowstone, Montana, a cowboy bursts into the Saloon firing guns and announcing to the four winds that he has found a large vein of gold and nuggets of the golden metal the size of a clenched fist. That night he turns up dead and the despotic local Sheriff arrests a former black slave who was in town as a suspect for the crime.
The prison will mobilize the local Pastor (a former retired gunman), the female descendant of Indians who takes care of the local stable and the prostitute who had an affair with the deceased. Everyone seems to believe in the innocence boasted by the accused.
The booklet of the classic western film is all in the film, very well linked by the script and the direction. There’s the accusation of the wrong man for racism, barbaric crimes, dueling egos, women wanting independence, the dangerous seduction of gold, the saloon where it all happens…
The cast is really good. Gabriel Byrne shines as the Sheriff who is as obstinate in “purifying” the city as he is closed in on the thesis that the outsider ngero must be the criminal. Thomas Jane, in his impassivity, plays a Pastor in conflict between the Word of God and the weapons kept in the drawer. Isaiah Mustafa is Cicero, a strong and educated man who challenges institutions with arguments that an ex-slave is not allowed to have. Richard Dreyfuss is Blake, a former actor, now the bartender who recites Shakespeare between drinks at the Saloon.
The female suit is equally competent. Anna Camp is Alice Murphy, Pastor’s wife who pushes him to leave inertia and prove Cicero’s innocence. Scottie Thompson is Emma the widow with her own agenda. Tanaya Beatty is the person responsible for taking care of the horses in the city and another one to suspect the accusation.
It’s not just because I love westerns that I liked Gray’s film so much. I think it was created and filmed very competently.
It discusses modern themes (racism, feminism, greed) in a frame of homage to western classics.
Yellowstone is worth visiting. Despite all the dangers that the little town hides.
