Em 1975, foi lançado o filme O HOMEM QUE QUERIA SER REI, dirigido pelo lendário cineasta john Huston. Esteve em todas as listas de melhores do ano. Vi no Cine Victória, ali na esquina da avenida Borges com a Rua Andrade Neves. Lembro que saí da sala deslumbrado com as aventuras narradas pelo escritor Rudyard Kipling, vivido no filme por Christopher Plummer.
Os dois personagens centrais eram Daniel Dravot (Sean Connery maravilhoso) e Peachy Carneham (Michael Caine no auge de sua arte), ex-soldados de Sua Majestade que ficaram na Índia e vão para o País Kafiristan, onde nenhum branco pisou desde Alexandre, o Grande, com o intuito de governar o País.
O HOMEM QUE QUERIA SER REI é uma extraordinária aventura, narrada com toda a arte e talento que um cineasta diferenciado tinha. Huston fez aqui um de seus melhores filmes. E olha que ele tem um currículo inacreditável de ótimos filmes.
Mas como tudo filme de alto nível, esse também enfoca temas essenciais para lá da aventura: racismo, maçonaria, arrogância, colonialismo, guerra.
Além dos astros de primeira grandeza do cinema, o elenco contava com Shakira Caine, então esposa do ator Michael Caine. A beleza incrível dela ilumina o filme em várias cenas.
Revi ontem, depois de muitos anos O HOMEM QUE QUERIA SER REI. Está disponível no Amazon Prime Video. São duas horas e pouco de puro encantamento.
É uma jóia rara do cinema dos anos 70.
In 1975, the film THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING was released, directed by legendary filmmaker John Huston. It was on every best of the year list. I saw it at Cine Victoria, on the corner of Avenida Borges and Rua Andrade Neves. I remember leaving the room dazzled by the adventures narrated by writer Rudyard Kipling, played in the film by Christopher Plummer.
The two central characters were Daniel Dravot (wonderful Sean Connery) and Peachy Carneham (Michael Caine at the height of his art), former soldiers of Her Majesty who stayed in India and go to Kafiristan Country, where no caucasian man has trodden since Alexander the Great, with the intention of governing the country.
THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING is an extraordinary adventure, narrated with all the art and talent that a distinguished filmmaker had. Huston made one of his best films here. And he has an unbelievable resume of great films.
But like all high-level films, this one also focuses on essential themes beyond the adventure: racism, freemasonry, arrogance, colonialism, war.
In addition to the first-class movie stars, the cast included Shakira Caine, then wife of actor Michael Caine. Her incredible beauty lights up the movie in several scenes.
Yesterday, after many years, I reviewed THE MAN WHO WOULD BE KING. It is available on Amazon Prime Video. It’s two and a half hours of pure enchantment.
It’s a rare gem of 70’s cinema.
