Um avô que recém enviuvou, muda-se para a casa ao lado de onde moram seu neto e o pai separado. No dia do décimo aniversário do menino, concebe uma caça ao tesouro, espalhando pistas em locais conhecidos deles. Ocorre que o menino sai da escola para ir atrás de seu presente e desaparece, dando início a uma caçada policial que vai encontrar segredos do passado que ninguém mais quer enfrentar.
O veterano Peter Coyote (E.T. – O EXTRATERRESTRE, ERIN BROKOVICH – UMA MULHER DE TALENTO, PATCH ADAMS) lidera o elenco no papel do avô viúvo que tem que encarar os primeiros sinais de senilidade, o desespero pelo sumiço do neto e as memórias de sua falecida esposa. Belo e sensível trabalho.
Ao lado dele estão a canadense Joanne Kelly (vista na série ARMAZÉM 13), Micheline Lanctot (premiada atriz de Montreal), Aden Young e o menino revelação Michael Riendeau. Os trabalhos deles, como as pessoas cuja vida vai se destruindo pelo desaparecimento é muito bom.
Os filmes policiais e séries de tv sobre sequestros de crianças e adolescentes estão em moda, sendo inúmeros os seus exemplos, vindos das mais diversas cinematografias. É interessante comparar estes trabalhos para se ver as diferenças de enfoque no rapto em si, dos envolvimentos familiares e comunitários e da própria ação de autoridades policiais na investigação.
Este O DESPARECIMENTO tem muitos méritos. Bem maiores que os lugares comuns em que inevitavelmente cai ao percorrer um caminho tantas vezes já trilhado no cinema.

A grandfather who has just widowed, moves to the house next to where his grandson and his estranged father live. On the tenth birthday of the boy, he conceives a treasure hunt, scattering clues in places known to them. It happens that the boy leaves school to go after his present and disappears, initiating a police hunt that will find secrets of the past that nobody else wants to face.
Veteran actor Peter Coyote (E.T., ERIN BROKOVICH, PATCH ADAMS) leads the cast as the widowed grandfather who has to face the first signs of senility, desperation for the disappearance of the grandson and memories of his late wife. Beautiful and sensitive work.
Next to him are Canada’s Joanne Kelly (seen in WAREHOUSE 13), Micheline Lanctot (award-winning actress from Montreal), Aden Young and the revelation boy Michael Riendeau. Their jobs, like people whose life is being destroyed by disappearance is very good.
Police films and TV series on child and adolescent kidnappings are in vogue, with countless examples from a variety of cinematographers. It is interesting to compare these studies to see the differences in approach to abduction itself, family and community involvement, and the action of police authorities in the investigation.
