A super talentosa atriz Jessica Chastain está de volta às telas em AVA, thriller que o cineasta americano Tate Taylor rodou e que teve um “early release” nas plataformas de streaming. Como sou fã desta ruivinha californiana, me dispus a pagar os R$ 24,00 para alugar o filme. Ah, tem de bônus um elenco ótimo, com John Malkovich (sempre excelente), Colin Farrell, o rapper Common, Geena Davis, Ioan Gruffudd, Joan Chen, Jess Weixler e Diana Silver.
O filme conta a história de um ex-combatente da Guerra do Golfo que vira uma assassina profissional para uma organização clandestina black opps que mata por encomenda. A certo momento, ela (uma ex-drogada) começa a perguntar aos alvos o que eles fizeram de ruim, o que desafia a agência, que resolve encerrá-la.
A capacidade que faz de Ava uma assassina perfeita, passa a ser sua chance de sobreviver. A narrativa passa por várias cidades, pois Ava resolve ir atrás dos cabeças para se salvar. A fotografia do competente sul-africano Stephen Goldblatt é outro ativo forte do filme.
Há muitas cenas de luta corporal, muitos tiroteios e assassinatos a granel. A produção é da Freckle Films, empresa da própria Chastain, o que retira algum senso crítico do filme em que ela também é a estrela.
De qualquer sorte, como o propósito primeiro de um thriller é entreter o espectador com muita ação, AVA atinge o alvo. Fiquei os 1h36min com o olhar fixado na tela, torcendo por AVA. Não fica no topo da carreira de Chastain (A HORA MAIS ESCURA e THE HELP), mas agrada seu público. Ainda mais em tempos de pandemia.

The ability that makes Ava a perfect killer becomes her chance to survive. The narrative goes through several cities, as Ava decides to go after the heads to save herself. The photograph of the competent South African Stephen Goldblatt is another strong asset of the film.
There are many scenes of corporal struggle, many shootings and mass murders. The production is by Freckle Films, Chastain’s own company, which removes some critical sense from the film in which she is also the star.
In any case, as the primary purpose of a thriller is to entertain the viewer with a lot of action, AVA hits the target. I stayed at 1h36min with my gaze fixed on the screen, hoping for AVA. It’s not at the top of Chastain’s career (THE DARKEST HOUR and THE HELP), but it pleases his audience. Even more in times of pandemic.
