Nada funciona bem no filme.
Last week, I reported here a new movie based on the books by writer Gregory McDonald, with the character of investigative journalist Irwin M. Fletcher.
I went to review the film that Michael Ritchie made with the character in 1975. I still find it very weak. Chevy Chase was evidently a serious case of “miscast”.
While Fletch has a sense of humor of his own, casting a comedian was a mistake. It would be like casting a comedian to play Detective Phillip Marlowe, another character who was characterized by the irony of his responses.
Nothing works well in the movie. Not even the blonde Dana Wheeler-Nicholson can save a very bad script.
I hope the new film, with the great Jon Ham in the role of Fletch, does justice to the character of literature.
