Em 1987, fui ao Cine Astor (uma sala gigante que ficava na Avenida Cristóvão Colombo com Benjamin Constant) ver o novo filme do astro ascendente Arnold Schwarzenegger, PREDADOR, filme dirigido por John McTiernan. O ator já tinha feito dois filmes de que eu gostava muito: O EXTERMINADOR DO FUTURO e CONAN, O BÁRBARO. Merecia meu crédito. O melhor do diretor viria no ano seguinte: DURO DE MATAR.
PREDADOR era uma história de ficção científica sobre uma raça de caçadores intergalácticos que vinha à Terra em períodos variados para treinar seus dotes de predadores invulgares e suas armas tecnologicamente avançadas em seres inferiores. Não sabiam que podiam dar de cara com Arnold Schwarzenegger (Dutch), um militar especializado em combate e guerrilha. Até hoje guardo boas lembranças do filme.
O sucesso enorme do filme gerou uma dúzia de sequências, refilmagens, retomadas, todas bem inferiores ao original. Chegaram ao cúmulo (tudo por dinheiro) de fazer ALIEN VS. PREDADOR, usando mal dois personagens ótimos do cinema.
Esta semana o HULU (e aqui o STAR+) lançaram PREY, dirigido pelo cineasta americano Dan Trachtenberg (10 CLOVERFIELD LANE e a série THE BOYS), um cara jovem (41 anos) e ascendente na indústria.
O filme tenta inovar e embarcar em movimentos de grande atualidade. Tem como protagonista uma jovem indígena que quer ser reconhecida pelos pares como caçadora, mas é desrespeitada por ser mulher. A atriz Amber Midthunder se sai muito bem como a jovem Naru que luta por reconhecimento com seu irmão Taabe (Dakota Beevers) e seus parceiros caçadores da tribo Comanche.
O filme cai na armadilha da violência exagerada e fácil. Há múltiplas cenas de mutilações e decapitações. A certa altura do filme, a trama resolve introduzir um grupo de caçadores ilegais, para proporcionar ao Predador a chance de um massacre sem culpa. Mais violência. Acho que neste ponto o diretor foi muito mal.
No geral, PREY não foge muito a seus antecessores. O Predador aparece, exibe suas armas e tecnologias, mata muita gente e terá dificuldades ao lidar com o improviso e a determinação de um humano (aqui a jovem Naru) mais integrada com a natureza de seu habitat.
Vai ser um grande sucesso de streaming. Mas é mais do mesmo.
Saudades da dupla Schwarzenegger e Tiernan. O Predador deles segue imbatível.
In 1987, I went to the Cine Astor (a giant room on Avenida Cristóvão Colombo and Avenue Benjamin Constant) to see the new movie by rising star Arnold Schwarzenegger, PREDADOR, a film directed by John McTiernan. The actor had already made two films that I really liked: TERMINATOR and CONAN THE BARBARIAN. He deserved my credit. The director’s best would come the following year: DIE HARD.
PREDATOR was a science fiction story about a race of intergalactic hunters that came to Earth at varying times to train their unusual predator skills and their technologically advanced weapons on lesser beings. They didn’t know they could come face to face with Arnold Schwarzenegger (Dutch), a military expert in combat and guerrilla warfare. I still have fond memories of the film to this day.
The film’s enormous success spawned a dozen sequels, remakes, retakes, all of which were far inferior to the original. They came to the heights (all for money) of making ALIEN VS. PREDATOR, misusing two great movie characters.
This week HULU (and here STAR+) released PREY, directed by American filmmaker Dan Trachtenberg (10 CLOVERFIELD LANE and THE BOYS series), a young guy (41 years old) and rising in the industry.
The film tries to innovate and embark on movements of great actuality. Its protagonist is a young indigenous woman who wants to be recognized by her peers as a hunter, but is disrespected for being a woman. Actress Amber Midthunder does very well as young Naru who struggles for recognition with her brother Taabe (Dakota Beevers) and their fellow hunters from the Comanche tribe.
The film falls into the trap of exaggerated and easy violence. There are multiple scenes of mutilations and beheadings. At one point in the film, the plot decides to introduce a group of poachers, to give the Predator the chance for a blameless massacre. More violence. I think at this point the director was very bad.
Overall, PREY doesn’t differ much from its predecessors. The Predator appears, displays its weapons and technologies, kills a lot of people and will have difficulties dealing with the improvisation and determination of a human (here the young Naru) more integrated with the nature of her habitat.
It’s going to be a huge streaming success. But it’s more of the same.
Missing the duo Schwarzenegger and Tiernan. Their Predator remains unbeatable.
