Estreou nesta quinta-feira na NETFLIX, a série de oito episódios, THE DIPLOMAT, protagonizada por Keri Russel (também produtora do show) e Rufus Sewell.
Um casal de diplomatas é surpreendido quando a Casa Branca, em meio a uma crise internacional, convoca Kate Wyler (a esposa) para assumir a Embaixada americana em Londres. Até então coadjuvante do marido, o polêmico Hal Wyler, ela vem para o centro do foco em um momento de grande tensão nos meios diplomáticos.
O problema do momento é um atentado que vitimou trinta e pouco marinheiros britânicos em um Porta-Aviões do Reino Unido, atacado na costa do Irã. Habitual suspeito dos atos de terrorismo, o Irã passa a ser o alvo de todo tipo de ofensas e promessas de retaliações. O clima para famílias de descendência iraniana em Londres passa a ser ainda mais perigoso.
No meio da diplomacia, Kate chega a Londres no meio do furacão. Tem que se adaptar à nova função, encarar o marido que teima em ser protagonista, um casamento em fase final, a desconfiança do staff e dos demais diplomatas e o assédio da imprensa sensacionalista.
Vi cinco dos oito capítulos.
Gostei bastante.
Acho que o roteiro (embora algumas concessões ingênuas) retrata muito bem o que deve ser o ambiente em altas rodas da diplomacia internacional: muita pressão, egos inflados, ciúmes sem fim, traições profissionais e pessoais, mesquinharias e planos secretos de ascensão e queda.
A série não economizou na produção. Os ambientes onde Kate trabalha são impressionantes, pela beleza, opulência e riqueza de detalhes.
A gente fica vendo as reuniões entre diplomatas de grandes países e imaginando quantas vezes decisões importantes são tomadas quase ao acaso, saídas de gabinetes cujo contato com o mundo real é tão tênue.
THE DIPLOMAT é um ótimo programa. Divertido e reflexivo, ao mesmo tempo.

A couple of diplomats are surprised when the White House, in the midst of an international crisis, summons Kate Wyler (the wife) to take over the American Embassy in London. Until then, supporting her husband, the controversial Hal Wyler, she comes to the center of the focus at a time of great tension in diplomatic circles.
The problem of the moment is an attack that killed thirty or so British sailors on a UK Aircraft Carrier, attacked off the coast of Iran. Habitually suspected of acts of terrorism, Iran becomes the target of all kinds of offenses and promises of retaliation. The climate for families of Iranian descent in London becomes even more dangerous.
In the midst of diplomacy, Kate arrives in London in the eyet of a hurricane. She has to adapt to her new role, face her husband who insists on being the protagonist, a marriage in the final stages, distrust from the staff and other diplomats, and harassment from the sensationalist press.
I saw five of the eight chapters.
I really liked it.
I think the script (despite some naive concessions) portrays very well what the environment in high circles of international diplomacy should be like: a lot of pressure, inflated egos, endless jealousy, professional and personal betrayals, pettiness and secret plans for rise and fall.
The series did not skimp on production. The environments where Kate works are impressive for their beauty, opulence and richness of detail.
We keep watching meetings between diplomats from large countries and imagining how often important decisions are taken almost by chance, coming out of offices whose contact with the real world is so tenuous.
THE DIPLOMAT is a great program. Fun and reflective at the same time.
