A BALADA DE LEFTY BROWN, western dirigido por Jared Moshe (jovem americano cineasta de filmes independentes) – disponível no NOW – é um excelente western estrelado por Bill Pullman, certamente em uma de suas melhores atuações.
Pullman vive o veterano cowboy ajudante Lefty Brown, cuja dificuldade motora de sua mão esquerda e um visível coxear lhe renderam, além do apelido pejorativo, um profundo desprezo de parte de todos com quem convive.
Ele testemunha o assassinato de seu amigo e mentor, o Senador Edward Johnson (Peter Fonda, ótimo) e mesmo com descrédito geral, resolve ir atrás dos três assassinos.
O ambiente não poderia ser mais fascinante. As paisagens extraordinárias do inerior de Montana, proporcionando uma cena mais linda que a outra.
Na jornada ele encontra o jovem Jeremiah aspirante a pistoleiro (Diego Joseph) e um velho e alcoólatra amigo (Tommy Flanagan). Estes três underdogs vão atrás de justiça, custe o que custar.
Ao voltar de sua jornada, Lefty se depara com uma falsa acusação de ter sido quem matou o amigo, fazendo com que tenha que buscar sua inocência, mesmo contra as poderosas armadilhas do Governador Jimmy Bierce (Jim Caviezel).
Em sua busca pela verdade, Lefty ainda tem que refazer sua relação com a viúva Laura Johnson (Katy Baker, sempre excelente), que acredita nos valores do velho amigo de seu falecido marido, mas tembém fica cheia de dúvidas.
Western recheado de dramas pessoais, superações, busca por justiça, o eterno drama do homem errado, amizades e traições, A BALADA DE LEFTY BROWN consegue atingir o nível das melhores homenagens aos filmes de faroeste clássico.
Em sua crítica sobre o filme no THE NEW YORK TIMES, Manohla Dargis escreveu: “O Sr. Pullman, sua boa aparência obscurecida por sombras de claro-escuro e costeletas de carneiro, mantém você amarrado a Lefty mesmo quando as divagações se transformam em desvios. Moshé conhece seu gênero. Há beleza em suas tomadas panoramicas e encanto em seus gestos reflexivos, tipificados pelo amor de Jeremiah pelo heroísmo mítico que prefigura o futuro dele e de Lefty. No entanto, a autoconsciência é também uma marca registrada desse gênero.”

THE BALLAD OF LEFTY BROWN, directed by Jared Moshe (a young American independent filmmaker) – available on NOW – is an excellent western starring Bill Pullman, certainly in one of his best performances.
Pullman lives the veteran cowboy helper Lefty Brown, whose motor impairment of his left hand and a visible limp has earned him, in addition to the pejorative nickname, a deep contempt from everyone with whom he lives.
He witnesses the murder of his friend and mentor, Senator Edward Johnson (Peter Fonda, great) and even with general discredit, decides to go after the three assassins.
The environment could not be more fascinating. The extraordinary landscapes of the back of Montana, providing a scene more beautiful than the other.
On the journey he meets the young aspiring gunslinger Jeremiah (Diego Joseph) and an old and alcoholic friend (Tommy Flanagan). These three underdogs go after justice no matter what the cost.
Lefty still faces a false accusation that he killed his friend, causing him to seek his innocence, even against the powerful traps of Governor Jimmy Bierce (Jim Caviezel).
In his quest for truth, Lefty has yet to remake his relationship with widow Laura Johnson (Katy Baker, always excellent), who believes in the values of her late husband’s old friend, but is also full of doubts.
Western stuffed with personal dramas, overruns, quest for justice, the eternal drama of the wrong man, friendships and betrayals, THE BALLAD OF LEFTY BROWN manages to reach the level of best honors for classic Western movies.
In his critique of the film in THE NEW YORK TIMES, Manohla Dargis wrote:
“Mr. Pullman, his good looks obscured by chiaroscuro shadows and mutton chops, keeps you tethered to Lefty even when the rambling turns to drift. Mr. Moshé knows his genre. There’s beauty in his panoramas and charm in his reflexive gestures, typified by Jeremiah’s love for the mythic heroism that foreshadows his and Lefty’s future. Yet self-consciousness is also a hallmark of this genre.”
I HIGHLY recommend THE LEFTY BROWN BALLET to all fans of a great western. After all, you will recognize many figures, scenes and values from the greatest classics of the Western.
