O ÚLTIMO PISTOLEIRO (THE SHOOTIST), de Don Siegel (1976) entrou para a história como o último filme de John Wayne, justamente um western, gênero em que estão seus melhores trabalhos, como NO TEMPO DAS DILIGÊNCIAS, RASTROS DE ÓDIO e O HOMEM QUE MATOU O FACÍNORA, todos de John Ford, BRAVURA INDÔMITA, de Henry Hathaway e RIO LOBO, de Howard Hawks.
Já doente e no final da vida, Wayne fez este último filme sobre um pistoleiro do Oeste (J.B.Books) que, diagnosticado com câncer se refugia na casa de uma viúva para passar seus últimos dias. O problema é que quando a notícia se espalha na cidade todo tipo de pistoleiro quer ter a glória de ter matado a lenda Books.
Lauren Baccal (com a categoria e classe de sempre), James Stewart (ator icônico), Richard Boone e um jovem Ron Howard(depois cineasta premiado de UMA MENTE BRILHANTE) fazem um cast de altíssimo nível.
O filme tem tudo que os fãs do gênero amam: uma história cheia de valores humanos (tristeza, despedida, lealdade, amizade), grandes personagens, uma paisagem que quase tem vida e muito tiroteio.
Como filme testamento de John Wayne, O ÚLTIMO PISTOLEIRO fica perfeito. A saudade que dá dos filmes do grande John Wayne é imediata e insuperável. Ele, como o personagem, virou uma lenda no cinema principlamente pelos westerns inesquecíveis que fez.

Already ill and late in life, Wayne made this latest film about a Western gunslinger (J.B.Books) who, diagnosed with cancer, takes refuge in a widow’s house to spend his last days. The problem is that when the news spreads in the city all kinds of gunslinger want to have the glory of having killed the Books legend.
Lauren Baccal (with the category and class of always), James Stewart (another iconic actor), Richard Boone and a young Ron Howard (later a filmmaker award winning of BEAUTIFUL MIND) make cast at a very high level.
The film has everything that fans of the genre love: a story full of human values (sadness, farewell, loyalty, friendship), great characters and a landscape that almost has life and much shooting.
As a last movie, a true John Wayne’s testament, THE SHOOTIST is great. The memories for John Wayne’s films is immediate and insurmountable. He, as the character, became a legend in the cinema mainly for the unforgettable westerns that did.
