Em 1969, o diretor George Roy Hill (que quatro anos depois ganhou o Oscar de Melhor Diretor por GOLPE DE MESTRE) levou às telas um roteiro do multi premiado William Goldman (dois Oscars e um BAFTA) contando a história real de dois dos amis famosos assaltantes do faroeste americano: Butch Cassidy e Sundance Kid.
Robert Leroy Parker (o nome real de Butch) e Harry Longabaugh (Sundance) marcaram época como asaltantes de bancos, trens e comboios, nos Estados Unidos e posteriormente na América do Sul, para onde fugiram no final de sua carreira. Há uma dúvida entre os historiadores sobre se realmente os dois morreram na Bolívia (onde teriam sido enterrados como indigentes) porque uma irmã de Butch afirmava que ele retornou aos EUA e morreu velho e no anonimato.
O filme de Hill e Goldman idealiza os dois ladrões. Paul Newman e Robert Redford, no auge de sua juventude (Paul com 44 anos e Redford com 33) se juntavam à lindíssima Katharine Ross (vinda do enorme sucesso como Elaine Robinson em A PRIMEIRA NOITE DE UM HOMEM (THE GRADUATE), de Mike Nichols) para viver as aventuras da simpática dupla de malfeitores. Para glamurizar ainda mais os dois, Hill trouxe para fazer a trilha sonora um dos astros musicais do momento, o prolífico cantor e compositor Burt Bacharach (mais de 639 filmes com músicas de sua autoria) e sua inesquecível RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN’ ON MY HEAD.
O filme foi indicado a 7 Oscars, vencendo 4 (Roteiro, Fotografia, Trilha sonora e Canção) e 9 BAFTAs vencendo 8 (Filme, Direção, Roteiro, Trilha Sonora, Fotografia, Montagem, Ator – Redford e Atriz -Katharine).
BUTCH CASSIDY AND SUNDANCE KID criou um estilo de western (meio lírico e meio cômico) cujo tom da narrativa incluia romance e comédia para atenuar a violência e o número de mortes do enredo. A própria cena final tem esta característica de atenuação da violência pelo humor.
Como marcou época, o filme teve vários outros títulos a retomar seus personagens. A própria Katharine Ross, em 1976 fez o telefilme PROCURADA: A MULHER DE SUNDANCE, dirigido por Lee Phillips que mostrava a vida da Professora Etta Place depois da morte dos dois famosos assaltantes. Houve também outro telefilme de 1974, com a personagem de Etta Place, vivida pela eterna FEITICEIRA Elizabeth Montgomery, chamado MRS.SUNDANCE.
Em 2011, o excelente Sam Shepard viveu um velho Butch Cassidy no ótimo filme BLACKTHORN (OS IMPLACÁVEIS), dirigido por Mateo Gil, contando uma história segundo a qual Butch teria sobrevivido à perseguição do exército boliviano e viveria como fazendeiro nas montanhas daquele País.
BUTCH CASSIDY E SUNDANCE KID é um filme clássico, pela excelência de seu roteiro, pela direção inspirada, pelo elenco fora de série e por cenas antológicas como Butch e Etta andando de bicicleta ao som de uma das canções mais famosas da história do cinema. Para ver e rever muitas vezes.
In 1969, director George Roy Hill (who four years later won the Best Director Oscar for THE STING) brought to the movies a screenplay of the award-winning William Goldman (two Oscars and one BAFTA) telling the true story of two from the most famous robbers of the American western: Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid.
Robert Leroy Parker (Butch’s real name) and Harry Longabaugh (Sundance) marked times as bank and train robbers in the United States and later in South America, where they fled at the end of their career. There is a doubt among historians as to whether they actually died in Bolivia (where they would have been buried as indigents), because a Butch’s sister claimed that he returned to the US and died old and anonymous.
Hill and Goldman’s film idealizes both thieves. Paul Newman and Robert Redford, at the height of their youth (44-year-old Paul and 33-year-old Redford), joined the gorgeous Katharine Ross (coming from the huge success as Elaine Robinson in Mike Nichols‘ THE GRADUATE) to live the adventures of the friendly duo of evildoers. To further glamorize the two, Hill brought the soundtrack to one of the musical stars of the moment, prolific singer-songwriter Burt Bacharach (over 639 films with songs of his own) and his unforgettable RAINDROPS KEEP FALLIN ‘ON MY HEAD.

BUTCH CASSIDY AND SUNDANCE KID created a western style whose tone of the narrative included romance and comedy to mitigate the violence and the deaths of the plot. The final scene itself has this feature of attenuating humor violence.
As it marked, the film had several other titles to retake its characters. Katharine Ross herself, in 1976, made the movie WANTED : SUNDANCE WOMAN, directed by Lee Phillips that showed the life of Professor Etta Place after the death of the two famous assailants. There was also another 1974 telefilm featuring the character of Etta Place, played by the eternal BEWITCHED Elizabeth Montgomery named MRS.SUNDANCE.
In 2011, the excellent Sam Shepard lived an old Butch Cassidy in the great movie BLACKTHORN, directed by Mateo Gil, telling a story that Butch survived the pursuit of the Bolivian army and lived as a farmer in the mountains of that country.
BUTCH CASSIDY AND THE SUNDANCE KID is a classic movie, for the excellence of its screenplay, inspired movie directing, outstanding cast and anthological scenes like Butch and Etta riding bike with one of the most famous songs in the history of movies. To see and see again often.
