Em 1981, o extraordinário cineasta tcheco Milos Forman fez NA ÉPOCA DO RAGTIME (baseado no romance de E.L.Doctorow), e escalou (como uma homenagem de um cineasta cinéfilo), James Cagney no importante papel do Comissário de Polícia de Nova Iorque Rhinelander Waldo. A história chama a atenção de que Cagney, quando filmou RAGTIME tinha 81 anos, enquanto o Comissário Waldo tinha 33 anos na época dos fatos narrados no filme.
