A ESCOLHA DE SOFIA: O Drama Levado ao Superlativo em um Filme Inesquecível

Um dos filmes mais impressionantes que eu vi (e dos mais tristes) foi A ESCOLHA DE SOFIA, que Alan J. Pakula rodou em 1982. Com 2h37min, a adaptação cinematográfica do best-seller de William Styron narra a história de um jovem escritor americano que vai se instalar no Brooklyn para escrever sua primeira novela. Ali ele encontra um casal cujo passado guarda segredos e mistérios impenetráveis.

Com o passar do tempo, o relacionamento deles vai se estreitando e o jovem Stingo (Peter McNicol) descobre que a linda e instável Sofia (Meryl Streep em desempenho antológico) era uma sobrevivente de Auschwitz que tinha sido obrigada pelos nazistas a uma escolha terrível. A única esperança de Sofia manter sua sanidade era o amor por Nathan, papel de estréia (maravilhosa) de Kevin Kline.

Os aspectos formais do filme são simplesmente perfeitos. A fotografia de Nestor Almendros é simplesmente inesquecível, das mais lindas da história do cinema, tanto nas magníficas locações em Nova Iorque como lúgubres cenas de Auschwitz (recriado na Croácia). A trilha sonora de Marvin Hamlisch é outro trabalho de mestre dele.

O filme foi indicado a quatro Oscars mas somente ganhou o de melhor atriz, o segundo da coleção de Meryl Streep.

One of the most impressive films I have seen (and the saddest) was SOPHIE’S CHOICE, which Alan J. Pakula shot in 1982.

In 2h37min, the film adaptation of William Styron‘s bestseller tells the story of a young American writer who is going to settle in Brooklyn to write his first novel. There he meets a couple whose past holds impenetrable secrets and mysteries.

Over time, their relationship becomes closer and young Stingo (Peter McNicol) discovers that the beautiful and unstable Sofia (Meryl Streep in anthological performance) was a survivor of Auschwitz who had been forced by the Nazis to make a terrible choice. Sofia’s only hope of maintaining her sanity was love for Nathan, Kevin Kline‘s (wonderful) debut role.

The formal aspects of the film are just perfect. Nestor Almendros’ photography is simply unforgettable, one of the most beautiful in the history of cinema, both in the magnificent locations in New York and in the dreary scenes of Auschwitz (recreated in Croatia). Marvin Hamlisch’s soundtrack is another masterpiece of his.

The film was nominated for four Oscars but only won the best actress, the second in the Meryl Streep collection. Alan J. Pakula is the director of films like KLUTE, ALL THE PRESIDENT’S MEN, THE PARALLAX VIEW and PRESUMED INNOCENT. He is a wonderful filmmaker.
