Um jovem solitária recapitula uma viagem de férias que fez com seu Pai, vinte anos atrás.
O filme de Wells é quase uma poesia filmada ou um ensaio fotográfico sobre o tempo e a memória. O espectador vai sendo informado sobre o relacionamento pai e filha à medida em que as cenas da viagem vão se sucedendo na tela.
Nada é bombástico, sensacional ou contundente. Tudo é lento, sensível e quase lírico.
São poucas as cenas com Sophie na idade atual. A protagonista é a menina Sophie (a estreante Frankie Corio, ótima) e seu relacionamento com o Pai Calum (Paul Mescal).
Tudo é minimalista.
Mas a câmera de Wells (e seu roteiro) despeja carinho e afetividade sobre aquelas memórias da menina Sophie. Mesmo quando ela discorda do que Calum faz ou fala, há uma atmosfera de afeto.
AFTERSUN é uma surpresa. É um filme pequeno que ganha dimensão pelo talento das pessoas envolvidas e pelo humanismo de suas imagens.

A lonely young woman, now adult (Celia Rowlson-Hall) recaps a vacation she took with her father twenty years ago.
Wells’s film is almost a filmed poetry or a photographic essay about time and memory.
The viewer is gradually informed about the father-daughter relationship as the travel scenes unfold on screen.
Nothing is bombastic, sensational or blunt. Everything is slow, sensitive and almost lyrical.
There are few scenes with Sophie at her current age. The protagonist is the girl Sophie (newcomer Frankie Corio, great) and her relationship with Father Calum (Paul Mescal).
Everything is minimalist.
But Wells’ camera (and her script) pours affection and love over those memories of the girl Sophie.
Even when she disagrees with what Calum does or says, there is an atmosphere of affection.
AFTERSUN is a surprise. It is a small film that takes on dimension due to the talent of the people involved and the humanism of its images.
