O ESCARLATE E O NEGRO: Telefilme de Guerra Tem Final Emotivo e Surpreendente

A Amazon Prime Video está mostrando O ESCARLATE E O NEGRO (THE SCARLET AND THE BLACK), que o americano Jack London (GUERRA, SOMBRA E ÁGUA FRESCA) dirigiu em 1983.

Trata-se da história real de um arcebispo irlandês chamado Hugh O’Flaherty (Gregory Peck, com o talento de sempre) que se notabilizou por proteger pessoas refugiadas do Nazismo que chegavam a Roma na época em que estava sob controle nazista. Christopher Plummer vive o Coronel da SS, Herbert Kappler e Sir John. Gielgud vive o Papa Pio XII. O elenco ainda tem Barbara Bouchet (musa daquele tempo) e Olga Karlatos.

Eu adoro filme de guerra. Os dramas – especialmente da Segunda Guerra Mundial – geraram um sem número de ótimas histórias e filmes memoráveis. O próprio Gregory Peck esteve magnífico em clássicos como OS CANHÕES DE NAVARONE.

Aqui, o duelo de seu personagem com o comandante local nazista é outra vez impressionante. Colocar a própria vida em risco para salvar outras pessoas inocentes foi um feito do Arcebispo O’Flaherty que merece ser conhecido.

Ainda mais que o roteiro – baseado em fatos reais, repita-se – guardou um grande surpresa para o final.

É de encher os olhos.

This is the true story of an Irish archbishop named Hugh O’Flaherty (Gregory Peck, with his usual talent) who was noted for protecting refugees from Nazis who arrived in Rome at the time it was under Nazi control. Christopher Plummer plays SS Colonel Herbert Kappler and Sir John. Gielgud plays Pope Pius XII. The cast still has Barbara Bouchet (muse of that time) and Olga Karlatos.

I love war movies. Dramas – especially from World War II – have spawned countless great stories and memorable movies. Gregory Peck himself was magnificent in classics such as THE GUNS OF NAVARONE.

Here, his character’s duel with the local Nazi commander is impressive again. Putting his own life on the line to save other innocent people was an achievement by Archbishop O’Flaherty that deserves to be known.

Even more than the script – based on real events, to repeat – saved a big surprise for the end.

It’s very emotional.

THE SCARLET AND THE BLACK has fully achieved its goal.
